United Kingdom Oblivion - Fr4me packaging

FR4ME™ presents a new generation of packaging. Scanavo’s FR4ME™ is a stylish, collectable and unique new way to package media.

It is Scanavo’s designers’ aim to add more collector value to media packaging and with it‘s stylish design and creative choices Fr4me™ does not disappoint!
Fr4me™ is the first packaging which gives Blu-rayTM owners the choice to customise their pack with their preferred choice of artwork. Fr4me™ can even stand, unaided, in a horizontal position like a real frame.

It’s stylish, minimalistic looks have presented a major attraction to film studio Universal Pictures, who have commissioned it for the UK release of their Sci-fi blockbuster OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise.

Within its innate ability to house a range of artwork, Fr4me™ can accommodate media on a range of materials, for instance lenticular. There is a special physical closeness to the artwork for the owner as there is no plastic film covering. A multitude of creative options exist for film studios to make Fr4me™ ideal for any genre and title.

Fr4me™ comes in a wide range of standard colours and the durable ABS substrate from which the outer ‘frames’ are made adds an exclusive touch which further redefines Blu-rayTM packaging.

With Scanavo comes the natural reassurance of quality. Scanavo - the premium packaging specialists - have created something worthy of the quality of Blu-rayTM. In a still strong physical media market, Fr4me™ adds value back into packaging and is sure to kick-start a whole new community of collectors.

OBLIVION packed in Fr4me™ will be available at most major UK retailers.
More exciting options for Fr4me™ will be developed in the near future!

Fr4me™ is a patented media packaging by Scanavo. Heard first at Hi-def Ninja

Personally, I hope this fails horribly. I can't see having this in my collection, especially since you can't even see the title when it's sideways. I think Scanavo should stick to making/improving SteelBooks and leave this kind of junk alone.

Interesting...but seems like if you got just one of these packages, you'd never need another again. You could just keep rotating what you put in it!

Right... more like a display of what you are currently watching. But nothing that I would want to permanently store them in.

They should have definitely made it so the spine showed the title. It looks kind of cool and futuristic though, but I don't see it becoming big like Steelbooks have. I would like to see what some studios do with it as well. We could see some cool color "frames" combined with a nice lenticular image.

Here's one more pic

FAIL

This is going to be so easy to boycott.

I think they're trying to fool us into liking this next generation "collectable" format, so that they can transition from steelbook to this. I mean it's cheaper to make right?

What are we toddlers playing with plastic and swapping picture around to fit the frame. This is like a baby's toy. And who came up with 'fr4me packaging'?

It reminds me of how Disney movies on VHS used to come in those horrible white clamshell things that were like an inch taller than every other tape in my collection.

That's right, we bought tapes! And we liked it, by cracky!

The idea behind this completely defeats the purpose of being a major collector. Without the title on the spine, it is evident that these are meant to be stored and displayed in the same manner as a picture frame would. Now, who has enough space in their house to display hundreds of picture frames? And, if not displaying as picture frames, who has the patience to weed through a hundred of these unmarked cases to find the title they are looking for? And worse, who has the want to have these strange randomly bright coloured strips of nothing in the shelves looking like some kind of dividers when they are anything but. If putting all of tgem together, the varying colours of the cases will look atrocious bunched together.

That being said, it really does look awesome with Oblivion. It reflects the production design perfectly. I still won't buy one for it though.

I'm looking forward to seeing this in the flesh. Disappointing that you can't see the title on the spine.

Maybe they can create a carousel for these things so you can rotate them like a rolodex. That's going to take up a lot of space.

The only way I would let this slide, is if it's for children's movies only. At least the kids can play with the case and customise it.

I am 35 years old and I never bought any VHS cuz I hate full screens, and VHS resolution is too low for widescreens. DVD came out and I became a huge collector.

By the way, I have this Seagate hard drive clamshell which is perfect for holding Blu-rays for what I am watching and it can stand on its own too!

Hmm. So, it sounds like the picture showing through the "FR4ME" can be be swapped around, as in, it contains alternative artwork inside so that "Blu-ray owners can choose the art"?

That kind of sounds interesting on one hand, but like a total fail of understanding the collectible market on the other. We collect things that are UNIQUE, one-of-a-kind, difficult or impossible to replicate. Sure, it's fun to customize with your own cover art, custom slipcovers, etc, but under the right circumstances what has real value is the original item.

A blank plastic frame in and of itself holds no value, if the same frame will be on hundreds of releases. It would be no different from an amaray, but for a couple more printed pieces of paper/cards inside to swap around. I'm not really an art card collector in the face of other, more interesting and difficult to duplicate packaging such as, say, a SteelBook.

I emailed the guys who make these with a bit of feedback and here's the response I received:

Quote:
Hi,

I just thought I would email you with a couple of pointers with regards to your FR4ME packaging. I realise you have probably invested a lot of money in R&D on these, but as a member of a popular Blu-Ray forum, there are a few things the collectors community would like to see change.

1. The fact that there is no name on the spine of the case is putting A LOT of people off. I realise that the intention is to display the packaging but not everyone has room to do so and therefore store their films on shelves. But if you have lots of FR4MES, how are we supposed to tell what is what?
There is an option now for the studios to choose title on the spine.

2. The spine is too thick. At 16mm, it is 2mm larger than the standard UK amaray case. Multiple FR4MEs will take up lots of room.
You are right. In order to develop the extra options and design of FR4ME™ we arrived at 16mm compared to a standard BD box which is 14-15mm. We believe that the design and options you get is worth the extra width.

3. The case doesn't seem to stand up on its own very well.
It will fit nicely on at bookshelf. However, one of the options of FR4ME™ is that it can stand horizontally, and with the shift-artwork function we believe this is a nice and very unique option for a BD packaging

I hope this is helpful feedback.
