I ordered my copy and yes its very pricey but i'm sure when we get it the price will seem insignificant.

However, when is it released?

I understand why many won't be able to justify the expense for this. There are very few films for which I'd buy an expensive edition taking up so much more shelf space. However, Withnail and I is one of those very few films for me. I disliked it when I first saw it in the early 1990s but have grown to love it over the years and watch it at least once a year, usually on a cold wet afternoon during the tail end of the year.

I don't think that £50 is outrageous for the content here - 2 restored films, loads of bonus content, the book and the personalization etc but it won't be for everyone.

Incidentally, I have number 10 of design 1 with the quote 'we are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell'. It would be interesting to see how popular each quote is further down the line.

Design nr 1 with the 'We want the finest wines... ' quote. For this film I'd be ready to pay more than usual anyway, but considering the content and the 200 page book I feel it is justified. The personalisation bit is a bit superfluous, but I'll probably enjoy it once I see it!

Design 1 for me, with the quote "We've gone on holiday by mistake"

My PayPal transaction went through (got a confirmation email), but the connection timed out when I was supposed to be transferred back to Arrow's site. I'm not TOO worried about it as I assume my order went through, but I haven't received any order confirmation email from Arrow yet. Is this normal when ordering from them?

I had both a Paypal email and an Arrow confirmation (with details of the personalisation and numbering) within a few seconds of each other. Perhaps contact customer services if it hasn't turned up shortly.

I love the film, I've been looking forward to Arrows release since it was first announced. But now I'm kind of annoyed that the only copy available to buy for the foreseeable future costs £50. I can justify that on the Herzog set (18 films) but not this, why can't they just release a standard 1 disc version as well.

All i really want is a copy of the film with a nice remastered picture.

From Arrow on Facebook:

A non-personalised version will be stocked on sites such as Zavvi and Amazon so do keep an eye in their sites as these should be going live very soon!

I'm leaning towards 2 myself. The cover of 1 is basically on the rear anyway. Its a tough choice.

Right, is it advised that I buy this even though I haven't seen the movie yet? I'm aware its a cult classic but should I spend £50 on blind buyind a customised box set? Decisions decisions...

I went for design number 4.

At first it was my least favourite but very quickly grew on me as it's different, suits the look of the film and I don't think it's ever been used as cover art before.

I was going for either 1 or 2 to start with but they've been used many times as cover art, and although it's a brilliant piece of art work it's printed on the back.

Watch it first. Spending £50 on a film you've never seen is a bit silly.
Particularly as it's customised, so if you buy it and hate it you might not make your money back.

What is the best blu ray currently available, one of the reasons I put off buying/watching it is because I heard the precious transfers are a bit pants

This will be the best one available

The Anchor Bay was not brilliant and the Studio Canal reissue was worse

Blimey, I can't justify 50 quid for this when just 10 quid more is getting me the gargantuan Borowczyk boxset, and I certainly do not need the personalization. I'll wait for the normal edition, which will hopefully have the strong on-disc supplemental package that we've come to expect from Arrow.

edit: I hope How to get ahead... is not exclusive to this limited edition. That's a brilliant film too, and I would not want to miss out.

This whole thing, the big box and the coffee table book, will be available from other retailers but without the personilisation. Might even be cheaper. Amazon should be putting it up soon.

This is what it says on the site about the book,

Quote:
Exclusive limited edition hardback book packaging (2,000 copies) containing new writing on the films, reprints of key articles on WITHNAIL and I, deleted scenes and more across 200 pages, illustrated with original production stills
