So, now 2001 is No. 1? Well, that makes more sense to me than PSYCHO, but I didn't number my list because I just don't think there's a number one anything when it comes to art, and I like looking at movies as art rather than as commercial entertainment, though that's probably closer to how most people view movies in our culture.

I wonder if a "scientific" survey of American film buffs on the top films of the sixties would get the same result? I love 2001, but I have to admit that most people I've mentioned the movie to since I first saw it in 1968 (when I was nine), who have also seen it, mostly regard it as a huge bore. Well, I originally saw it in Cinerama, and at that time and at the age I was, it was really something. It was no PLANET OF THE APES, which I saw just two or three months previous and was totally floored by, but it was something.

Is there anyone here that can argue that PLANET OF THE APES is better than 2001? I'd be interesting in hearing them. I like APES better, but it's a movie made by committee. That it came out so good (it's a classic!) is really kind of a happy accident. 2001 is something different, and I don't think I need to state why.

I also wanted to mention BULLITT. I saw this when it first came out too, and it remains a favorite, but I think its influence in American film was eclipsed by DIRTY HARRY in 1971, and its famous car chase seems too mechanical now. Still, it's one of the top films of the decade, and I also must mention POINT BLANK. Great movie, though a bit tawdry (and why it didn't make my list).

You know, I think there's just too many great films in the decade of the sixties for just a list of twenty.

The results are even more dissapointing this time. 2001 as No.1 is as conventional as it gets. Some Undeniably very great films are passed over. And this is the only list where I felt that more good films are out of the list than within the list. Only thing I really liked about the list was that The Apartment made into the list ranked at No.8, this is one film that is frequently under-recognized. Anyway, now onto the 70's.
