I did have a no blind-buying rule but have broken that about 5 or 6 times now. The only one that failed that test was The Place Beyond The Pines - sold that on the day after watching as I rated it barely a 7/10 and I knew I would definitely not be watching it again (I had trouble getting to the end, clock-watching central).
This is basically my philosophy too. I buy films that I really love and have high replay value, or "classics" if it's a great package with documentaries and other great extras (I won't rewatch E.T. that many times, but I still like the digibook). Some releases by Criterion, Arrow, MoC or the like I might blind buy, but I try to be careful with that too.

Blind buying new movies though - that I really tend to avoid. Unless they're as cheap or cheaper than a rental anyway. I'll pick up films I missed in the cinema but are interested in on deals if I can, there's quite a few stores that sell discs that used to be rentals... If I'll want to rewatch those, it's just a bonus.

Each person has different taste. Maybe they actually like those movies.

Not really. Some people will buy films just to own the entire collection of a franchise. I've heard people say they'll buy a film even though they don't like it just to have every film in the series. An example is the HALLOWEEN franchise which I personally think is crap after the first 3 but I won't buy the others just so they can sit on my shelf and never be watched.

I'll only buy films that I love and I watch on a yearly basis. I have enough films that I bought on dvd and they collected dust over the past 15 years. Life is too expensive nowadays to blow my money on things I won't watch more than once. I'd rather read a book which will last me a lot longer than a film

Every movie I've bought falls under 2 categories

1) Movies I love which are bought Day 1

2) Movies I like but am unsure about buying unless they come in special packaging (steelbook, lenticular slip, etc) or can be bought at a very reasonable price (usually Black Friday or with coupons/discounts)

I've never bought a movie just for the sake of completion (reason I own, and like, every Resident Evil movie except the 3rd one which I couldn't stand) nor ever bought a movie I didn't at least enjoy / felt like I got my money out of it.

I blind buy almost everything but I only blind buy stuff that interests me greatly. I always check the ratings the movie gets and I read a brief summary.

I also pay very close attention the directors/writers/actors, etc.

I buy movies I enjoyed in the theater and know I'll be able to watch them over and over. So if a friend is over and says, "I want to watch X movie." Then I can be like "Sure, let's do it!"

Only ones I love. I think buying everything just cheapens your collection.

I completely understand this, but what if a member has 200 movies in their collection they love and another member has pretty much the same 200 plus 1000 more?
I like to give my friends and family more choices of a movie to watch when they visit.

Believe me, I don't "love" every movie in my collection, but if I can get a used Blu-ray for cheaper than renting or streaming it, I always buy the used Blu-ray.
Every rental, download, streamed movie is a strike against physical media, so I avoid that at all costs.

I have a friend that told me she wanted to watch Mirrors on Blu-ray.
I, personally, would never buy that movie, but I found it used for $3 and it made her happy and it still represents one of the many warts in my collection. I'll keep it around in case someone else wants to suffer through a terrible Kiefer Sutherland disaster.

well, there are many who I think at least 50% of their collection is a blind buy.
I'm trying to be very cautious about blind buys.

I mostly buy Blu-rays of films which I love and know I will re-watch. For films I haven't seen there is renting and streaming. Sometimes, when there is no other way to watch a film I really want to see in HD, I'll blind buy. If I don't like the film, I re-sell it asap after. I have neither the financial resources not the storage space to buy everything I want to see

Like half my collection was probably "blind buy".

When I buy blu-rays of movies I "love", often those are the ones that sit around the longest before I watch them. Of course when I say "blind buy" I don't mean I just buy random shit. I don't buy new releases or crappy films I know I will hate - I basically just buy established catalog movies that for whatever reason I might not have seen - but I WANT to see them (sometimes I've been meaning to see them for years).

right now, I am replacing all my DVDs, well with my all time favorites also mixed in with that I will buy anything on IMDB that has over a 7 rating, MOST movies over 7 rating I like on there, I have been starting with the top 250

I have been getting box sets first in some cases box sets are cheaper then buying Individual Blu Rays- for example Sadly I have to deal with having rocky V in my collection but I LOVE the other 5 films, so sometimes those box sets can be embarrassing on having to own movies you don't want (think Superman box set not sure what I will do on that yet

When it comes to franchises, i'll occasionally buy movies I don't care for, but only if they're cheap (Batman Forever comes to mind) or in a box set with the rest, but right now i'm just either upgrading movies I have on DVD (or even never upgraded from VHS or had at all) I really like and buying new releases that either like or are blind buys.

A lot of my DVD collection were blind buys, but i'll only upgrade those I really like.

I buy films and TV series based on their content or genre. For the most part, they're all blind buys, as I haven't gone to the theater regularly since 2002. Ever since I got a decent home theater set-up (I'm talking about a 5.1 sound set-up) I feel there's no good reason to go to a theater in which I have no idea about the quality of the showing. So with that said, I have a few favorite genres, like the following, Action, Adventure, Crime/Law Enforcement Thrillers, Spy/Espionage Thrillers, Comic Book stuff, Historical Epics/Dramas, War films, Sci-Fi including Utopia/Dystopia and Post-Apocalyptic stuff, and Westerns. If a series or film falls into those categories, I'll consider getting it. While those categories may seem quite broad, I'm in no way interested in "artsy" independent films, slasher or paranormal horror films, and comedies. When I was a youngster, comedies sometimes worked just to watch, but as I grew older and was buying films on VHS, DVDs, BDs, I stay away from comedies. Oh, I am also not a fan of classic films from the 1930s to 1950s. Zero interest whatsoever. My oldest films are probably the original James Bond films. I don't even care for the older WWII films pre-1960. Why? I just find that the film making process changed quite a bit post 1960. In terms on how things were filmed. It's like the difference between the non digital age (CG) and the post digital age. I know many old school film fans hate how CG has taken over the film industry, but as a long time sci-fi fan, looking back on those older sci-fi films where CG would have made a huge difference in the realism department, I find that since CG has been used, sci-fi has finally gotten the tool it needed to realistically portray what they couldn't just 20 years ago.

Ive got hundreds of dvds and am really one replacing my absolute favourites on Bluray. 80s movies are the best with 90s movies coming in second after that the 70s are pretty good but not too fussed on new films except for some actors. I dont know how many I will replace on Bluray I guess it depends how much better they look and how much I can afford (not much lol). Will probably stick with Blurays for any new movies I buy from now on.

Yup, plus movies I loved growing up (around 1957-1969). I bought DVD's like there was no tomorrow & never looked at most of them. I don't buy many new films, my collection is about 95% catalogue releases.

When I first started seriously collecting movies it was during the DVD era. I had collected over 1000 DVDs before I sold or traded them off. Many of them I hadn't even watched and were still in plastic. When I moved into Blu ray I decided I would only buy movies my household loves to revisit. I am close to 300 Blu's now but my buying has come to a screeching halt. Online streaming has become to affordable and convenient for me to resist any longer and not having to worry about storing or displaying them has actually been a blessing. I know the woman of the house doesn't miss all the media cases around. During the DVD era we had no online options, you either owned it or had to go to the video store to rent. Now there are many options available to the viewer. I will never get rid of my personal favorite Blu's but I also don't see me buying much like I did in the past.

I would say, as of right now, the only Blu's I'll be buying from here on out are absolute must have personal/household favorites.
