The 3D photography is excellent in this movie (minus the 2D segment) and puts most modern live 3D to shame. Depth is strong, and roundness is nearly perfect. 3D definitely benefits the story-telling. There are a lot of pop-outs, and most of them are so extreme that I couldn't converge on them sitting close (5ft) to my TV screen.

The story is very cheesy and started to drag for me, despite its short runtime. It's kind of a low-budget, noire-slapstick hamfest. I couldn't pass up adding it to my collection though, being only the second 3D movie of the 1950s. I basically enjoyed it as a fun 3D history lesson and am very interested in seeing more 1950s 3D on BD3D, especially the ones with more well-regarded stories.

The PQ of the transfer is good--very grainy, but detailed as you might expect. Unfortunately, the only special feature is the theatrical trailer. Overall, thumbs up for the release. Thumbs down for the price.

IMO Man In The Dark is the best example of 3D I've seen so far from the classic era. It's a sharper transfer than "Creature" or "House of Wax". Granted the story is a forgettable noir tale but the photography with the then, new Columbia 3D camera is spot on. Restoration, digital transfer and 3D technical A+.....story/plot line C-....price B.
I can appreciate that most movie watchers don't care much for the classic 3D era but for me, I'll buy every single classic 3D title that's transferred to Blu Ray. I don't care what the price is!!

I've had my copy for a couple days, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet. The personal experiences I am reading is really getting me stoked to watch it. Glad it looks good!

EDIT:

I have only watched a bit, but Holy Cow! Phenomenal 3D! Tons of foreground content!

+1 This!

The movie is a great example of pure native-3D cinematography where faces have volume and closeups have their noses illusionally sticking out at you. Love the operation scene, (when viewed on a discrete-3D viewer). The instruments literally seem to come out of the screen and attempt to touch your face like you're the patient. Love it!

Cannot wait to see this film, great selection by TT...still waiting to purchase a 3D emitter for my projector.

Is anybody a fan of Edmond O'Brien ... The guy has some pretty interesting ties to Houdini and Orson Wells. On XM radio I catch him once in awhile as Johnny Dollar on the Radio Classics channel.

Oh man, of course. If I had any gripe, it would be that it is a pretty short film. The officer talking to the main character during the first few minutes was sticking out of the screen. His entire body! It has been a while since I've seen that much foreground 3D.

Review is up:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Man-i.../91344/#Review

Unless I'm mistaken, the very first sentence:
"It's pop quiz time: name the first major studio release of a 3D film (in the old anaglyph process)."
- is incorrect.

Anaglyph was used for 3D comics of the time, but not first run features of the day.

You're correct. This, and "House of Wax" they also mention, as was the vast majority of 3D films, released as polarized, not anaglyph. So much for doing their research for the review.

Wow they really did get that wrong!! There has NEVER been a dual eye, anaglyph 3D movie released. All of the 50's titles were dual eye polarized.

Well, the TT collection will grow by another three for me. The comments on here put me over the fence so I had to order Man In The Dark. I don't expect this title to be a "The Third Man" but the premise is cool and I look forward to one of the first films to kick off the early 1950s 3-D craze. Maybe TT can release Bwana Devil. That would be cool!

I'm a big fan. He's great in D.O.A. He's so intense, too--I don't think I've ever seen a movie with him where he's not sweating profusely at some point.

Hey guys I ordered this from Screen Archives using paypal on the 17th, but it still says 'pending'. Should I be concerned, or are they normally slow?

thanks

Usually if your PayPal accounts indicates "pending" for a long period of time, there is a chance you've used an incorrect identifier for the seller. You might want to check that out.
