Well clearly $29.95 is not too much because that's what SAE charges for TT titles, no more-no less.

Not sure. Guess it depends on what one wants.

I bought the Dawn of the Dead Japanese LD box set back in the day for $200 and many of the Criterion LD's where $100 a pop.

Twilight Time movies seem aimed more towards serious collectors than casual buyers. It's the way laserdiscs were, as opposed to DVDs and BDs, as has been pointed out. It's no use complaining, it won't change, it's their whole business model.

I'm happy to see The Train coming to HD and will gladly pay $30, but I do think it's a shame that more people won't get to experience it, as would happen if it were selling for $15. That said, TT getting the rights means there was nobody, including MGM, willing to release a $15 BD of this title and many others.

Barring bad transfer, this is easily one of the my most anticipated titles of the year. Granted, I haven't seen the movie yet, but, man, sounds like a all round great film. Plus, I'm a huge fan of Lancaster and war flicks and that completely seal the deal for me!

Hopefully, TT and MGM will do the movie justice.

I don't really understand the economics behind that. I mean, MGM obviously already paid to create the HD master that TT are licensing in the first place, so what would they have to lose by releasing a BD themselves?

Either way, I don't really care. I'll gladly play $30 for this excellent film on BD. I just don't understand the advantage to licensing out a master that you've already got sitting there, ready to go. There must be a ton of overhead costs I'm overlooking.

Just because TT is getting this doesn't necessary mean that nobody else wanted to release it. Same goes for some of their other titles with Fox.

I bought BDs of Richard Lester's "Cuba" and Fred Schepisi's "The Russia House" from Germany. Both started with MGM logos, so they're clearly MGM HD masters that were licensed to the German distribs. I would assume all the HD masters are being created just for future use, but that MGM doesn't think it's worth the effort to release deep catalog titles like these on BD in the USA. However since the masters exist, minor labels overseas can release them at minimal expense.

effort. why spend the effort and time for something that's not going to selling a gazillion copies when places like TT will pay the whole chunk of change up front

Since I'm a TT newb, can somebody tell me approximately how far in advance these titles typically go up for pre-sale?

About 3 weeks or so before the release date.

Of all the titles coming out from TT in the next few months, The Train and Used Cars are the ones I am most looking forward to.

I haven't ordered a TT title for some time but just picked up The Other today. (already own The Big Heat and Experiment in Terror)

The Train is definitely another film that I would be interested in obtaining as I have really enjoyed every film of Frankenheimer's from the sixties. (The Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days in May, Seconds) Hopefully the film will receive a nice HD digital transfer.

You're in for a real treat. It's a great movie. I'm picky about what TT titles I get but this one will be hard to pass up.

I would like to get this one, but TT just charges too much for their releases.

Is the general consensus that this title will remain available for a while? I would like to put this off another week or so. I haven't heard much buzz about it.

I'd imagine at LEAST a couple of months.
I've got my copy sitting in my cart with The Man From Laramie
