Looks good; I probably would have bought this edition if I hadn't bought the JP release from another member here for $45.

I still need to get Porco Rosso though (as I don't wait to wait for "TBA 2015" for Disney US to get around to releasing it along with Spirited Away).

Thanks for keeping this thread alive guys while I've been neglecting it. Don't really have anything new to add right now but I do have just about every Taiwanese release after Poppy Hill on my christmas list this year so I'll be able to finally get the main FAQ up to date with the full details for Porco, Poko, Cat, Wind, Mononoke & Spirited Away some time in January.

Default The Studio Ghibli (TW) Discussion Thread

Got Spirited Away, which will probably be my last Taiwan Ghibli import unless Ocean Waves gets released on BD. I admit it's mainly because I tend to prefer the U.S. Releases for the dubs and the English subs on bonus features in Japanese. But the TW releases are definitely the closest versions to the Japanese releases.

Although short on bonuses like the Japanese release (storyboards, trailers, and dubbing script), it seems that one feature previously unique to the JP releases has been added to Taiwan releases, the dubbing script. For those who can read Japanese, you can follow the script and jump into the film from the point you are reading from.

[Show spoiler]

Yeah some of the newer releases come with the dubbing script (I know at least one other title does but can't recall which). Have you ran a BDinfo scan yet? You might notice that the runtime on this release is fractionally longer than the Japanese, which I think is the reason that the average bitrate is slightly shorter (same thing as with Tales of Earthsea and at least one of the other recent releases).

Japanese release = 2h:04m:32.256s = 26973 kbps
Taiwan release = 2h:04m:32.756 - 26971kbps

I haven't, mainly because I ran out of computers to try AnyDVD HD. Interesting observation about the bit rate.

I did check out the DVD included, which had the same infamous red transfer of the original Japanese DVD. Glad the picture on the TW BD doesn't have that!

Gah! Can't say I've looked at any of the DVDs in my Taiwan collection. Wasn't it re-released on DVD in Japan at the same time the BD came out (thought it was anyway)? Do you know if that has the red tint too?

I think the reissued JP DVD has the new transfer and shouldn't have the red tint.

Interesting thread Is it true there arent any English subs on the extra features for Spirited Away?
I like the cover art better than the UK release though.

As far as I know there aren't English subs for any of the bonus features on HK or TW Ghibli discs.

Yeah there are no English subs on any of the Extra Features on any of my TWN Blu-rays. BTW Grim if you're ordering from JSDVDMall bear in mind that to save money on shipping you should look at buying multiple titles. The Shipping section in the FAQ explains it better.

Also, make sure you contact JSDVDMall and ask them to write a lower item price on the package if you want a good chance of avoiding customs charge. My brother made a large purchase before xmas and got stung on customs!

Thanks Shing
I might wait until next month before buying the Japanese BDs (JSDVD is Japanese right?) or get the UK ones

But they do sell the Japanese releases as well, so make sure you don't go ordering a bunch of Japanese discs from the place if you can't afford them!

True, but their prices for the JP releases are atrocious (US$80 before shipping). In comparison, I bought Kiki's Delivery Service the other day from Amazon Japan for $52.xx including EMS shipping...

Yeah you've got to overlook the fact that the covers are different and the prices are about three times more to end up ordering a Japanese release over the Taiwanese! But hey, I guess if you're ordering multiple titles it might be easier to mistakenly add the wrong title and check out without realising. Not likely though!

The Taiwan release of When Marnie Was There is now available to preorder thru JSDVD with a release date of 07/03.

The bonus features currently listed on the Chinese listing indicate that the bonus features are most likely the same as the Japanese release (including the dubbing script). Not surprising, as Mandarin was the only foreign dub included on the Japanese release. Still, it will be a different disc print as usual, as the TW versions have English/Chinese bilingual menus.

Taiwanese retailer JSDVD currently has a 30% off sale on selected Ghibli titles. Most titles are 590 TWD ($19.07 USD), with a minimum shipping cost of 320 TWD ($10.35 USD) for 0.5 kg.

What's notable about this sale is that Only Yesterday (which isn't available on BD in any English speaking country) is included in this sale. So this is probably the best way to get this film (with the same transfer as the JP disc, English friendly menus, English subs, and the same bonus features as the JP disc).

I just noticed that Pom Poko's in the database now. I bought it about a month ago, and I'm glad I can finally add it to my collection.

Hmm...put an order together but when I input my CC information I get a payment failed message. Anyone know what I may be doing wrong?

Its been a while since I placed a order, but I recall the secure credit card payment page with another service.

Have you entered all the information correctly (including if requested phone number with appropriate country code)? Have you passed the verified with Visa/MasterCard page (if it appears)? Do you think your bank is denying it due to a overseas transaction?

Hopefully someone else can chime in whose's been through the process more recently.
