Yyyyep, maybe it's that I share the ancient DNA-memory of thinking "PD-Vultures" every time I hear IAWL, but right away I could smell the big, fat smell of minor-league producers who weren't aware the original movie isn't Public Domain anymore, and are about to find out--
But I kept thinking, "No, wait...It's been back in ownership for what, fifteen years now? Thought everybody knew that, they've GOT to know by now! "

That works out well because I offered no opinion of your collection.

No shit. That was kind of where I was going with the whole 'are we really sick of sequels' bit.

Again, this is exactly what I was driving at. Just about everybody who's ever claimed to be completely fed up with sequels and reboots and rehashed garbage carves out numerous exceptions for the ones they like.

Which makes all the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments more than a little silly, no?

And to the eighth, ninth, eleventh, and thirty-second posters about to make this same identical post, let's make a nice, friendly b*tch-sla...er, reality check:

Later info has revealed that the original IAWL turned out to be under copyright, and after a frank exchange of communication between Republic Pictures and the would-be producers, it is looking very likely as if "Hollywood"'s (or at least, "Overly optimistic bottom-feeding indie producers still living in the 80's"'s) "unoriginal" sequel will not be going forward as planned.
This is still in the early stages of negotiations, however, and may be subject to change, but not by too darned much.

Say it after me, people. Say it nice, clearly, distinctly, and victoriously: "BUS-tedddd!... "

On the one hand this is good news of the apparent road block.
But I suspect they knew full well that the rights were not public domain and this was just a way to get enough PR to start talks wth Paramount and to try and convince the studio into making a deal with them.

Oh so it appears its the bs cliche idea of featuring the next generation in the sequel.

So, unnecessary sequel to a classic film and using the lame next generation gimmick. The double whammy for unoriginality.

They going to set this in present day too?

If there was ever a user name that summed up how this makes me feel Debbie Downer would be it.

Yeah, sounded a little like "cyber-squatting", like with those "Rear Window 3D" producers.
(Watch, we're about to get someone posting, "Whatever happened with that project?", 3-2-1...)

But then, y'know, a lot of people who grew up with the "IAWL on every station" joke imprinted on their cerebral cortex as National Cliche' Punchline back in the 80's just aren't aware that it was bought up back in the 90's--That's probably why you may have noticed it hasn't been on "every station" for the last fifteen or twenty years, although contractually licensed broadcaster NBC sure flogs the living crap out of it between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I've even seen a few Christmas sitcom episodes that clearly wanted to depict a joke about the characters sitting around watching IAWL on TV, except, of course, that...rights wouldn't allow them to use IAWL, and they had to rewrite it to depict the characters sitting around watching the '51 Christmas Carol, which was still in public domain.
Our 80's-childhood generation is just never going to get that joke out of our system, no matter how much reality intrudes. The young people are lucky, in a way, even if they'll never know what a UHF station was.

(So, let's distill this down in easy to read terms for the next page of posters:
That movie that bothers you so much? Don't worry--It DOESN'T EXIST anymore.
Maybe we should change the header to "Doesn't get's a sequel".)

Not every movie should get a sequel. There are some movies that just need to be one and done: Gone With The Wind, It's A Wonderful Life, Miracle On 34th Street, Wizard Of Oz......to name a few.

Leave it ALONE Hollywood!!!! It's A Wonderful Life is a timeless classic that does not need a SEQUEL!! What's next....a sequel to The Ten Commandments!!

I don't know what is worse:

#1. The fact that they are actually making a sequel to It's A Wonderful Life.

or

#2. There have been over 20 scripts written as attempts at a sequel to It's A Wonderful Life.

(Darn, where's the Strike-Thru option on the formatting, now that we don't have to worry about this one anymore?)

#3. Scripwriters and comics who still have passive-aggressive issues over the days when IAWL actually was public domain on every station.

#4. People so wishfully determined to discuss "Hollywood's plague of sequels" at all costs, they don't read threads.
