Was walking around in Sherway Gardens today and lo and behold I saw an open NEW Sunrise Records! Talked to the employees and they said they literally opened today. The store looks AMAZING. Didn't get time to walk to the back but it looks like they have nearly ALL the blu-ray/DVD stock that HMV carried. There were a lot of vinyls and a nice T-shirt/apparel section too. They have some deals on blu-rays marked $12.99 (I think they go down to 2 for 20) and t-shirts are 2 for 30. Gonna go again tomorrow and see what the rest of deals are.

Too bad there isn't one slated to open in Oshawa

I could really use another physical media retailer around these parts!

For those that are interested four new locations are now open.

Masonville Place - London, ON
Pickering Town Centre - Pickering, ON
Quinte Mall - Bellevue, ON
Sherway Gardens - Etobicoke, ON

Had my first Sunrise experience yesterday. Not bad, not great. It was an old HMV location and looked almost identical. The big change was at the entrance of the store where a lot of the old shelves were replaced by records. The movie section was fairly small and carried mostly mainstream titles and newer releases. Surprisingly quite a few DVDs, which I didn't really look through. Prices seemed fair and in line with what you'd see at Amazon or Bestbuy. Only about two 4K titles. The new Underworld and I forget what the other was. Didn't see a single Shout, Vestron, Arrow, etc. They did have a small 2/20 section that had some interesting stuff in it.

I have a feeling the stores in the West are not going to open up for a while. I passed a couple locations earlier this week and they haven't even started renovating the spaces yet.

The one I went to they didn't renovate at all. Shelves were in the exact same place, checkout was unchanged, storefront was identical (other than the sign above the entrance). They removed 2 shelves at the front and dumped in the kind where you can flip through records. My guess is everything took them a couple hours to do

I walked by the Chinook location today and they were starting to put stock on the shelves, so I figure they should be open soon(ish).

West Edmonton Mall location looks like it's getting ready to open soon. I saw some vinyl displays and racks on the lower level. Top level had movies - looks like they will be carrying quite a few! The old HMV sign is still up, though. And other than the wooden vinyl racks, everything else looks the same as HMV was.

Walked by one of the two old Saskatoon HMV locations the other day. Staff members were inside stocking the shelves. Just like other people's observations, pretty much nothing has changed other than the wooden racks for vinyl by the front door. HMV sign was still up, still had the same t-shirt section on the wall, and it was even all of the same old HMV staff members inside. I could see a few new release blu-rays on display so they gotta be opening soon (the sign outside just said opening summer), but could not see if there were any other interesting catalogue titles inside.

The Sunrise Records in Guildford Mall in Surrey looks like it's on the verge of opening ' if it already hasn't.

Haven't gone to one in such a long time. Will have to see what the SQ1 location is like. Seems like they're focusing on vinyl for most places. It will be good if they get their online setup in order, and take that portion of the business seriously.

I dropped by the SQ1 location. It is exactly like HMV so no different. A small section for blu-rays. Animated stuff is off to the back. They do have a 2 for 20 deal on select movies. The Mummy re-releases are 2 for 20 and have movie money. I picked up the 3rd one and another movie for the deal. Prices are in line with MSRP.

Sunrise is open at Rideau Centre in Ottawa. Not much of a blu selection, but some decent prices on catalogue WB blus. Prices I'd pay if I was interested or didn't already have them.

I'll visit from time to time, but not sure I'll do much shopping there.
