Star date?

MS should make that number condensed.

Oh man, that was so obvious. How did I not realize that?

This update fixed the issue I was having on not being able to get surround sound when watching TV through the Xbox One. Great news!

Both MS and Sony are still catching up with features that should have been there at release ... a bit sad really.

Let's hope that both will soon have full DLNA support and be able to do something as basic as playing mp3s directly.

The bigger question is whether they're adding Dolby Digital support for the optical out. Lot of legacy headphone users are still pissed about the lack of it, and they did say they would address it in an update because they didn't get the Dolby licensing in time for launch.

But yeah, Elandyll... They need DLNA support that runs in a background app that I don't have to leave snapped. I love Forza... but I'd much rather be racing to my own tunes, and custom soundtracks should have carried over from 360. Sad that they didn't have some of the best things about the 360 on the Xbox One at launch, but at least it looks like they're going to update more often now to fix some of these things. Guess that's the advantage of the modular approach they took to the dash.

I agree with your 1st point 100%. I personally don't care for the DLNA or mp3 playback.

The bigger question than that is will they add Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD MA.

Yeah, hopefully it won't take too long for both of them to catch up to 2006.

No... There's no reason to add those. All HDMI-compliant AVRs that do TrueHD and DTS-HD MA support LPCM output. For them to support those codecs natively across HDMI, they would basically have to forgo mixing any of the system sounds into the audio stream... and for what? So people can see the codec lights on their receiver with no change in audio quality?

Basically, you'd be adding an unnecessary conversion. The system outputs PCM and sends to your AVR. What you're suggesting is that the system output PCM, then encode it internally to a compressed lossless format, then send that to the AVR, which then has to decode that format back to PCM for output to the amp section. Those lossless codecs exist to save space on Blu-ray discs and have no bearing whatsoever on output from a game system... and any encode/decode to/from those formats would just add audio latency. Even if you're talking about strictly to bitstream Blu-rays in their native formats, there should be no audible difference in decoding at the source or decoding at the AVR (though the only argument that could be made there would be jitter, which the compressed formats aren't susceptible to).

I'm not sure why people keep asking for that "feature". Seems kinda' like a waste of time to me, and all for people to see pretty lights on their receivers.

I personally wouldn't want the player to decode the audio (that's the AVR's job, but I know there are those who don't care). Doesn't matter in the end to me since I have my Denon BD player for movies but it's just silly that the PS4 can do those condecs and the XB1 can't (the XB1 is looking less and less next gen and more like a 360.5 and I'm surprised they went BD instead of making their own optical format like what Nintendo did for the wii-u). Anyway, I went off topic. I'm just glad they added the battery meter and the ability to acess the HDD to view how much space there's left.

Some features go back even further. The original Xbox (2001) allowed folks to rip CD's and make custom soundtracks, yet we can't do that on the Xbone over a decade later.

Same thing applies to the PS4. It's really a feature that didn't get much use (ergo why that feature isn't in the XB1).

Good stuff. Curious about what space I've used so far. Battery indicator will be nice too.

Again, it's a matter of what each system does. Xbox One is mixing audio from snapped apps, games, system, etc. and outputting it in its native PCM format. So it makes sense to decode Blu-ray codecs to maintain that ability to mix audio from both sides of the OS structure. Again, as there's no audible difference between lossless and lossless, it's kind of a silly thing to worry about. But I appreciate the sentiment at least. COULD they do it? Maybe... but why should they? It gives you a gain of absolutely nothing except making a different light come on your AVR.

MS seems to slowly but surely getting their act together and making it through the fact that they rushed their console to the market.

IMO the best thing that happened was the fact that they are clearly not dealing with any significant reports of hardware failure.

By November when a much bigger library of games enters the market both the Xbox One and PS4 should be more fully formed gems.

I am specifically hoping that 1080p/60fps games become more common for the Xbone by then.

I can't wait for that to happen.

Agree to disagree.

Please tell me you're joking. The 360 has been out 8yrs and you're saying that MS rushed the XB1? SMH

How would you know how often that feature was even used? I've known plenty of folks that used the custom soundtrack feature. More likely it was missing due to the consoles being rushed to the market before the holidays. The bd play back problems and lack of basic features from previous consoles reek of the consoles being rushed.

From your view point, MS didn't include a battery indicator in the Xbox One since it was soooo 2005 and people weren't using that feature often enough.
