There's obviously been some teal added, but that transfer actually doesn't look much different from the 35mm print I saw at the MoMA a few years back. Price is kinda steep at the moment, but will definitely be importing this once it drops. Those subtitles for the Maori scenes make this a no-brainer over the half-assed Miramax US release.

I can't believe how high the price is considering the standard packaging on the release. It currently holds a premium price tag. I'd have probably waited but I pre-ordered during the initial period when it was still set to release in January and was a much lower price. After the delay, the price sky-rocketed. Regarding the teal, it is a slight deviation from the current blu-ray release in terms of the shade of blue during those particular sequences, but honestly, I trust little from the Lionsgate release with the blown-out contrast and lack of film grain. I couldn't get over how natural the grain looks on the Studio Canal release.

Thanks for the info, JackTwist! I'll be picking it up when the price drops a bit.

Believe me, the blues were like the Lionsgate release.
I've seen the film when it was first released at cinemas, I have seen it many times since, and also I had books and publicity stills that all presented the blues as it is in the US release. No teal.
But anyway, I'll buy this UK version too..

For starters, all subs have returned for the sign language and Maori sequences that had been removed from most of the recent releases. The image quality far surpasses the Lionsgate release to the point that I'd label it near reference quality. Its obviously a newer restoration of a print in very good condition. Some of the color scheme is slightly different from the US release but it mirrors the European prints that you can find in earlier trailers for the film. With all of the special features, I'd be curious to know if this was director approved or not. I admire this film more than almost any other and to have this beautiful picture quality was unexpected. The issue of being teal-ified I don't think are warranted but perhaps I'm not the best judge on that issue. The 5.1 mix is also unexpectedly enveloping in a way that transcends previous experiences with the film. I say if you can play region B, purchase away. STRONG RECOMMENDATION.

Edit: Maori.
Hey TVM for this review and good news ref the maori subtitles issue. Shame about the teal but will definately purchase this edition as I don't own this great film in any format at the mo....will definately wait for a price drop though which WILL certainly happen !

I would bet that it is, since it's the same studio that released it.
It can't have released another version in another country.

Yeah but I've seen some Studio Canal Blu-rays that were different in France and Germany for instance...

I'm sure it is similar if not the same. The only question is why the delay from January to May if no quality changes were made...

The price is down to £14.34 on Amazon. I picked it up when it was around £15, and though I haven't watched it all the way through, I did check out a couple of scenes and it looks fantastic. I concur with JackTwist!
