As for ditching movies, no go, if I bought them, I'm keeping them unless a better variant comes along.
Yeah I am currently looking for the 6 disc cases that are slim. I can't seem to find them anywhere. The ones on EBAY the Viva Elite are the wider cases. I am trying to conserve shelf space this way.

I trimmed my collection back a while back getting rid of the crap. I also lost my mind and got rid of some of my Disney movies which are the only titles I regret letting go of.

Doesnt make too much sense but does mean you bought loads of films you didnt really want!

I suspect youre not alone there though...

Ive trimmed a few steelbooks here and there which were duplicates of titles I already had like Matrix, Blade Runner, The Thing etc.

It was just excess and idiocy. Buying sequels to complete sets, nostalgia from childhood, tv series I wouldn't have time to rewatch, blind buys, movies I simply liked but didn't love, etc...

Once upon a time, having anything and everything was ideal. There was the, “I can watch it whenever I get the itch, for the rest of time” mentality, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, there were things that wound up in my collection I just couldn’t find the time to watch. TV series – and this discussion for me includes DVD and Blu-ray – which I loved, but knew I’d never go back and watch. Films that may have been cool to see once, or were ‘just okay’, and weren’t worth my time to revisit.

With a lot of shelf space taken up, and more and more things coming out that I wanted to add to my collection without necessarily having the funds to do so, I decided to start trading stuff in. Well, I kept surprising myself more and more with what I was willing to part with… and was even MORE surprised to see just how much I hadn’t missed after the fact.

I kept getting rid of stuff, keeping only the stuff that I appreciate and may watch again, as opposed to the stuff that may have historical significance, stars classic performers, etc. There are films in my collection that are still classics and have classic film stars, of course, but I got rid of a lot of other stuff. As much as I liked having Gone with the Wind in my collection for example, it had to go, because I just didn’t care for that one.

I think I’m at a point where I’m pretty happy with where I’m at. I have a lot of my favorite stuff, and not much stuff that I’d consider ‘fat’… at least for me. Collecting for the sake of collecting… I’m not doing that anymore. I do blind buy stuff all the time, so I’ll have more to trade in the future… it’s just that I think it’s cheaper to buy than to actually go to the movie in theaters in the first place.

(Shelf 1 has a lot of movies from the 80s on, the ones that have been most important in my life, plus a few earlier ones that really resonated; the second has a lot of Criterion titles and "classics" that I like and respect but didn't see at the right time to become favorites.) The third is for movies that I haven't seen and picked up on a whim, or because I was curious and they were limited or not rentable on BD -- Twilight Time, various catalog titles that netflix didn't bother getting on Blu, that kind of thing. The third shelf often gets culled as I watch the movies and discover which titles migrate to one of the other shelves and which can be resold or swapped out at SwapaDVD.
I think this is smart, I might do something similar

I forced myself to re-watch my entire collection when I moved into a new house last year, including TV shows. My mentality was that if it was going to be a chore to watch it again, why have it? To make it more "fun", I removed my whole collection from this site and my shelf and then added them back in after I had watched them. OCD, anyone?

At any rate, it took me a little over a year and I watched everything in my collection except for one standalone season each of Nurse Jackie and Breaking Bad.

I'm pretty happy where I'm at now....around 200 blus. I will buy a few new releases here and there and stuff like the Twin Peaks complete series when it comes out, but other than that....my interest has kind of waned a bit. Maybe because it's summer and I'd rather be outside?

I'd love to be around your number

but to be realistic, to go back to the 500 club would be good enough for me

I've gotten to the point where I need to re-evaluate my collection since shelf space is non-existent at this point!

See my biggest problem is I'll trim the fat from my collection, but then a day or two later, will add 2-3 more titles! It's a viscous cycle.

Just purged the collection yesterday. Took so many BD/DVD/CDs to FYE that it took 3 people to look at everything and scan it. It isn't listed in my collection then I don't own it any more. It felt good.

After shipping and PayPal costs, I find it pointless to try and sell the 10-15 I would like to get rid of given how much the price of new titles have dropped. The sale of new $4.99-9.99 titles has tremendously hurt the used market.

I rent quite a bit, but you wouldn't know it by my total number of movies.

No kidding! I think that is one of the biggest reasons I still have alot of titles that I probably won't watch again, they have no re-sale value!

What sucks is I'd love to sell a bunch of titles for $5 a pop, but after shipping cost it just doesn't make sense. If only there was somewhere local I could sell them in person.

That's the main reason why I still have some of the titles I have. The re-sell value of them isn't worth the hassle of selling them.

My original comment in this thread still stands, in that there is no dead weight in my collection, and I'm quite pleased with everything.

My collection is the combination of an "autobiographical encapsulation" of movies that I have grown up watching (hence the 1980s nostalgic faves that many people might find cheesy by today's standards), classic-era favorites (black-and-white film noirs, old Technicolor films, etc.) that blow me away with each viewing, and the occasional adventurous blind buys of films that I have researched thoroughly from reviews and reputation (Possession, Rapture, etc.).

If I had to kick anything out of my awesome treehouse club of movies, then I would get rid of Superman Returns. That's a part of the big Superman Anthology box set, though, so it's going to stay.

All in all, I honestly cannot think of anything that I want to sell.

However...

Storage space is going to be a problem when my collection starts to edge closer to 1,000 movies.

I'm not sure what I will do at that point. I probably will not sell anything that I currently own, but I might just stop adding to the collection and simply revisit films that I already own. I'm already at the point where I enjoy revisiting previously-watched Blu-rays just as much as I enjoy checking out new purchases.

I don't know... I'll just cross that bridge when I get there.

Yep, I still have the digital copies in VUDU for most of what I sold off. Plus Haven season 4 was just announced so August 26 I will hit 15 again.

Exactly, I would even sell some at $4 each, but then it costs you money unless it's local.
