I'd say we're still looking looking at a chunky digipak here

Yeah, especially with 4 discs. This will be huge.

4K is more toward preservation. If you have to pick a version to preserve, always go with the director's intended version first.

I understand that sentiment, but to be completely honest, the director's preferred version means little to me if the version I prefer is getting the shaft. This is doubly true if the version it's getting the shaft for is one that wasn't exactly widely distributed. That's essentially defending George Lucas' logic of only releasing tweaked versions of his Star Wars films and pretending the more widely accepted versions never existed or don't deserve equal treatment. Granted, the changes to Red River were done under different circumstances, but I hope you understand my logic. Another example would be Francis Ford Coppola suddenly deciding that the original theatrical version of Apocalypse Now wasn't "important" enough to be preserved and thus only doing a 4K scan of Redux.

If it's packed with 140+ pages booklet, and 2 blu-rays - this was probably always destined to be a big-ass box anyway.

For this release, I'm ready for anything (even if the 2DVD's are a waste).

I don't have IAMMMW - but Nashville and Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion are almost a full 50% thicker than the standard Scanovo case.

The soft boxes are just very fragile. The corners *WILL* get frayed and beaten unless you are absolutely meticulous about how they are shelved.

I move my movies around frequently since I move between two different locations - and I have to box them up for transport. With plastic cases I can box them and forget about it - with digipacks that is literally impossible. Anything on the bottom of a box is 100% guaranteed to be not just end up with "frayed edges" and dented corners(which inevitably happens on digibooks and digipacks no matter how much care you take), but actually severely smashed and dented. I have to worry about that in storage as well, since I only bother having about 300 movies at a time "displayed" on a bookshelf in my family room - the rest are pretty much in Heavy Duty bankers boxes until I'm ready to switch what I have "ready" to watch on my shelf.

I wouldn't call the DVDs a waste. For people like me, who enjoy the DVD format's versatility, it's a dream. I don't know about you but I only have one friend with a Blu-ray player. Everyone else, including most of my family members, are rocking' an old school system. What if I want to show someone Red River that doesn't subscribe to Blu-ray? I'm frequently the one to do such a thing and I like to have DVD copies on hand, personally.

Red River is definitely one of the top five westerns
of all time. I would rank it #3 behind The Searchers and Shane.
I normally would not pay $40 for a movie, but I have been
waiting too long for this release.

I have to agree with that... although I would rank Shane ahead of The Searchers. Red River is not just one of the best westerns ever made, it is one of the best films ever made. I am really looking forward to this.

As I had said elsewhere, I CANNOT watch a DVD if I know a Bluray of it has been released.
(even if I haven't bought the Bluray yet)

One unexpected thing that happened to my Investigation was that it was on some surface, like a desk or a table, with a very tiny bit of debris in the upper corner, like a miniscule pebble or something. Didn't make any dents but scraped away the image so there's now a tiny little scribble-like pattern on the upper rear corner of my copy.

Red River Blu-ray REVIEW

PACKAGING:

It is a rather large box set because the novel is included with the Blu-ray. (More photos in our review).

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone

Oh my! This order just got much better! I love the packaging, and can't wait to read the novel.
My only regret is my Dad is no longer around to watch this, as it was one of his favorites!

IMO, one of John Wayne's best films...and that's a pretty fantastic list!
You are in for a treat!

Agreed, great film.

I wasn't wrong when I guessed that it would be a chunky package earlier in the thread ...but it looks like a great all around release.

Until you get to the very ending. It IS a great film, and it certainly is more than strong enough to overcome a bad ending scene, but it sure is a shame that it ends the way it does. The screenwriter hated the ending that was imposed on it.

Not a fan of including the novels. If I really want the novel I will buy a higher quality binding.

That said, I am THRILLED Criterion have finally released this!
