I do. I have a clunky Insignia that is on it's last legs . I really need to invest in a better region free player.

I don't think that these are irrational thoughts at all, I actually relate to a lot of them. Lets face it, we don't know where blu ray will be in the next 5 years.

I agree with you 100%. I have looked at it the same way. I found it more cost effective to invest in a monitor that can play PAL content as well as a lifetime subscription to AnyDVD HD (invaluable). With AnyDVD HD you can play anything region locked because you have the ability to play the raw .m2ts files. If it's a foreign film that does not have burned-in subtitles you can always use a free audio muxing software to fix that. Also, with this method I am not tied down to the BD format.

Of course one day Blu Ray will be outdone by a newer format, but I look at it like DVDs, they're still around, still being made. The same will be with Blu Ray, and region free DVD players are still being sold and some modded as well. I think Blu Ray will be around a pretty long while. I don't see 4K media fitting on a small disc anytime in the immediate future. Maybe Laserdisc sized Blu Rays? lol

Really? The discs with the proper capacity already exist. It's all about specs at this point. If I were to draw a timeline we'd be in about 2004-5 so in relation to BD development.

You probably installed the custom firmware for region free right? No BD player from any major company comes region free out of the box.

nope, got a PS3 so my discs need to be region free or I can't play it. Personally I find it a little strange that in this day and age region is still an issue. I understand copyright and all that means maybe you can't sell a disc in North America because you don't have the right but that doesn't mean that the consumer can't own it. Think it is time they cut this stuff out and just let the consumer buy whatever they want from whereever they want.

Living in the UK, I have a region B PS3 and a multi-region Sony which is always set to A. Before I had a cheap region A player which I picked up on a trip to NYC in addition to my PS3. I find that if you are interested in more than mainstream fare, it's pretty indispensable.

They had with HD DVD. They were also cheaper to make. Yeah, you lost out on lossless audio at times, but it was a nice feature.

How many gigs are we talking? I'm sure easily 100 plus?

In any case, I don't need my movies to look any better than 1080p, so please stick around Blu Ray!

I am in Australia and have an 'out of the box' region free BD player (Laser). I just type in 8520 on the remote and up comes the screen to choose what Region DVD/BD I want.

We get ripped off on prices for movies here. For instance World War Z is still over $25 here and I got it on amazon for $9. Same for many, many more titles. Also, a lot of movies get released on BD in the States much earlier than here and by the time we get them they are already marked down substantially in the U.S. so of course I'm going to buy the cheaper one (sometimes almost 70%). Not to mention movies we don't even get here at all that America does. So having a region free player is essential to me.

I only use Sony players... If I knew how to hack um, I would consider making mine region free.

I have some Blu rays from Europe but only the region free ones.

Esp for DVD.. I do have French DVDs... I tend to watch them on the (Mac) computer which is region free. (So long as you open them with free VLC.)

Does region free mean it'll play 1080/50i resolution discs?

I am in the market for a region free 3D player that will also play any region DVD, so basically, it'll play any disc I pop into it.. Any suggestions?

I like the added poll options, but wish the threads could have been merged to hold onto the comments...

I have a multi-region standalone.

More expensive than the studio releases that Best Buy and Amazon sell for $4.99? Definitely. But boutique label releases from Arrow, BFI, and MoC are certainly comparable in price to Scream and Synapse discs. Arrow sells pre-orders for £12.99 (with free shipping on orders over £50). At the current conversion rate, £12.99 works out to $21.70. That's only a couple of bucks more than Scream pre-orders go for on Amazon, and only a dollar more if you have to pay Amazon taxes. Many releases go even cheaper, as little as £6 on Amazon. I paid roughly $13 for each 88 Films release, and MoC's site has periodic sales as well.
