Our customs stinks - especially when it comes to stuff you just don’t get here.

Ymmv of course, I’ve been fortunate these past few years.
It's definitely YMMV ... I've been fortunate the past few years, but the first two or three Flash Sales I got dinged (though never to the tune of $38 ... ouch).

I did realize as well that over the past few sales, I've hit the $500 mark, which I means I have a $50 coupon for the next one.

It was 8 titles, so it was probably close to 190-200 USD w/ shipping. 160 USd value.

Although last flash sale he ordered the same number and wasn’t charged for customs. Also his order showed up within 3 days the last sale.. crazy!

Came home to find one of those cards to pick up a parcel at the post office with a charge of $21, it can only be my Criterion order.

Criterion 50% off Flash Sale until Noon EST tomorrow

I did the math and WOWHD's current sale comes up to be about the same prices or better. But not everything is on sale there. And if you have a gift certificate to Criterion's store, now's the time.

So basically my $10 gift certificate paid for my taxes. (Which I never had to pay before.) So thanks?

I received my Criterion Flash Sale order today. It was shipped directly from Alliance Entertainment's warehouse, like any order from wowhd.

Criterion Collection Lands Canadian Distributor

Quote:
Indie distributor Unobstructed View has acquired the exclusive Canadian distribution rights to the art house-focused Criterion Collection.

The Canadian deal, which includes films from David Cronenberg, Norman Jewison, Orson Welles, Spike Lee, Agnes Varda and Wes Anderson, follows Entertainment One ending its own deal to release the collection titles north of the U.S.-Canada border.

Stateside, the Criterion Channel streaming service, launched in April with more than 1,000 classic and contemporary films as a domestic replacement for Filmstruck, which WarnerMedia shuttered after two years in service.

"Criterion is the gold standard for DVD and Blu-ray releases, and we plan on making their content more available and more affordable for Canadian cinephiles," Unobstructed View president Jonathan Gross said in a statement. Among the first releases from Unobstructed View is a Blu-ray box set of 15 Godzilla monster movies, Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954-1975.

"The team at Unobstructed View understand the value of our special edition DVD and Blu-ray releases, and we’re looking forward to working closely with them to enable our Canadian fans, who have always been strong supporters of our brand, to build their collections and enjoy our films for many years to come," Jonathan Turell, CEO of the Criterion Collection, said in his own statement.

Time will tell what they mean by available and affordable.

Honestly I kind of wish these sorts of films would be sold in places like Chapters Indigo, as that seems like a place where people would enjoy something other than those box-office smashes.

Yeah, not sure if this is a good thing. Unobstructed View already distribute Arrow and Kino Lorber, and often these titles are very expensive (compared to other countries). My initial hunch is the continuation of high Criterion prices in Canada, but somewhat better availability.

That's not reaty too different from Criterion's direct store pricing. Aren't these still going to be on Amazon, and other retailers?

Which is fine for the US because you folks get 50% off four times a year. Here we don’t.

You don't really know if Unobstructed View will have direct sales for Criterion titles yet. They said in their prress release that there will be aggressive pricing promotions, so I don't see any reasons to not believe that will happen. The major incentive of this deal is Canadian distribution, which apparently has been lacking. Price-wise, I imagine releases will be decently priced at Amazon, even if they aren't as significantly discounted as the US.

Thought experiment: what would forum members here see as “aggressive pricing” that would make them buy Criterions in some kind of Canadian sale? $30 ... $25...?
