It has a great soundtrack. I have bought this on VHS and DVD. Looking forward to a extra packed Blu Ray.

Even Howard The Duck, I can see a reason for owning that if only for the over the top 80s style. This turd has nothing.
What about the film don't you like? Nearly every review released at the time praised it for its concept, acting, humor, production design, practical effects, SFX and musical score. The ONLY complaints it received were for its pacing and tonal inconsistency.

So, what exactly do you feel makes the film so bad? Obviously the narrative needed to be streamlined, but there are still so many good elements that I would say it's very difficult to not at least appreciate the film for what it is.

Bad acting (which was a surprise from Dennis Hopper and Bob Hoskins), stupid story, ends on a cliffhanger that was never resolved.

As I said, the acting was praised by critics. While it can certainly be seen as cheesy now I would not go so far as to dismiss the entirety of the performances. Fiona Shaw as Lena in particular stands out.

The story is exactly what was described in the original games. We shouldn't fault the writers for sticking to the basic premise provided.

The film was actually continued last year with a webcomic written with the support of the production and input from the original writers.

Mostly negative reviews upon release.
And to steal a joke from another reviewer, it "bob-ombed" at the box office.

Did you not read the several times I cited the positive reviews? I have both online reviews archived and newspaper clippings from the time; all support the notion of the film at least meriting a C.

The film did not bomb. It made back it's production budget in the U.S. while more than doubling that in foreign gross. Sure, it was no blockbuster, but it made a respectable amount of money. DVD sales have more than made up for any difference as well.

I've just gone through this topic again.
I've not seen any positive reviews from you in this thread. All I've seen, is that you work for the "Super Mario Bros: The Movie" archive and that you're consulting with Second Sight on the bonus features. And just because it's developed a cult foloowing, that doesn't automatically make it a good film.

The production budget was $48 million. The film only made $20,915,465 back at the box office.

It wasn't a big earner.

Dennis Hopper should have taken home the "Best Actor" Oscar that year instead it went to Tom Hanks.
This injustice, of the academy not to honour his performance and human take on a charter originally appeaingr as 8bit and at the time of shooting and release 16bit.

All over this one. Are the rights no longer with Disney/Buena Vista? Over here in the USA the film came out under the Hollywood Pictures banner, a subsidiary of Buena Vista/Disney. Not sure if they managed to get the rights from a different party. If however they have a deal with Buena Vista, kind of like how Mill Creek in USA released some of the lesser known Buena Vista titles, there are so many more I'd love them to get their hands on!
I'd love to see Metro (1997) with Eddie Murphy and Six Days Seven Nights (1998) with Harrison Ford. Both got cruddy 4x3 letterbox transfers in many countries. I think France got an OAR of Metro on dvd, but due to Pal speedup I try to avoid dvd only Pal releases and stick with the blu-rays as at least with those, no matter where you watch them, 1080p is always1080 p so noone sounds like the chipmunks when they talk.

The opening level of Super Mario Bros. has more creativitiy, fun and genius than this entire movie.

We've compiled a small amount of reviews on our site HERE. Most praise all of the points I've listed above, even if the final score/judgement wasn't positive. The film was middling.

I never said that it was a "good" film, just that it has good elements that many feel more than make up for its faults. It's certainly better executed and more cohesive than many other "so-bad-it's-good" cult films.

That number cited only takes into account the first few weeks of the film's domestic release while completely ignoring its foreign intake. Like I said, it wasn't a blockbuster, but it made back its money.

Having a cult following doesn't make it a good film, no. But being a flop at the box office doesn't make it a bad film either.

I just wonder why Billz keeps posting in a thread for a film he/she doesn't actually like.

I keep posting in here, because I like a debate, and I like trying to figure out why people like this film.

Still trying figure that out, by the way.

Having seen the film in theaters with over 200 people last year and the year before I can tell you we like the movie because it's funny, whether intentionally so or not.

I'm no fan of the movie, but I don't think any of us should be dissuading blu-ray releases.

Fair point. However don't blame the rest of us if you end up a gibbering wreck who speaks to strangers on buses!

If you think about it, the Resident Evil movies, arguably the video game genre's biggest success story, aren't exactly big money makers here in the US either. But their foreign grosses more than make up for it, especially with Afterlife and Retribution. Doesn't make them great films or even 'good films', but there you go.

PS: They are good films in my eyes, and so is Super Mario Bros..

Resident Evil Retribution is easily one of the worst movies ever made, others I got what I wanted from them for the most part.

The biggest Issue with the Mario movie is that it was nothing like the games, I guessing the people who made it never played them.

Yeah, I enjoyed the first two in the series and at least enjoyed some of the characters in Afterlife, but Retribution was the worst yet.

The writers actually played all of the available games extensively with particular focus on SMB2. The basic story of SMB, SMB3 and SMW are all integrated into the film's plot with elements from the other games inserted as well.
