![]() I didn't notice, but I wasn't listening very closely to the sound. I expect these things to look and sound a certain degree of rough, and I thought this one looked quite good. |

This was recommended in another thread, so I streamed it on Amazon. What a weird f**king movie. It has a pretty and appealing lead actress, a plucky young girl who wears a Nostromo hat and makes her own horror movies, and an assortment of random, unexplained monsters reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic gang, or a stable of wrestlers. Marta Kober (Sandra from F13 Part II) has a small role, and Andrew (Wishmaster) Divoff is in there somewhere.
I can't say it's good, but it's kinda enjoyable. Perfect fodder for Rifftrax. It also takes place around Halloween, which was a nice surprise. If it was in the bargain bin for under ten bucks, I'd totally buy it. But not this limited, $30 crap. BTW, despite being released in widescreen on DVD and Blu, the Amazon streaming version is a fullscreen VHS rip. More like steaming version, heh. What gives? |

This is a re-post of a brief review I posted in the Code Red forum:
Last weekend I watched my Code Red blu of the charming 80's horror flick Neon Maniacs. The film follows a few teenagers investigating a gang of homicidal beings that have slaughtered their friends, while trying to persuade the authorities of their existence. The film is obviously made by enthusiasts of the genre, despite its warts. The pacing of the film is pretty uneven and the plot is a sieve, but the maniacs are fun and the atmosphere eery. I enjoyed Donna Locke's character Paula who is a horror buff and wears her baseball hat sideways, though it looks like this was her only film. The film is pure 80's and perhaps that is why some of the rougher edges of the film seem harmless. The film's loopy plot keeps you on your feet because you don't really know where things are going sometimes, occasionally adding to the surprise factor when characters are killed off. A lot makes sense when you learn of the budgetary and scheduling issues that plagued the production. Code Red's presentation of the film is very good. The disc features an isolated music track, original trailer and a 13 minute interview with SFX make-up artist Allan Apone. Though the sweet title of the film never really extends to the actual film, I don't think this movie disappoints at all. Neon Maniacs is a solid BD in my Code Red collection and highly recommend. |

Watching my Code Red disc for the umpteenth time after blind-buying it more than five years ago. Big thanks to Bill for releasing this bizarre movie! Every time I watch it, I have so many questions (for example, why are there Neon Maniacs trading cards lying around in a skull near the Golden Gate Bridge?), yet it is so entertaining and weird that I am totally fine with the filmmakers never giving the audience any answers. Also, how can you not totally adore the character played by Donna Locke who loves horror and helps to fight the Neon Maniacs?! Absolutely love this odd little movie!
Whatever happened to the announced Australian (I think) Blu-ray release that was supposed to include a documentary about the film? I also recall reading that they somehow tracked down Donna Locke for an interview? Will double dip instantly if that ever materializes. ![]() EDIT: Just reviewed the (unfortunately) brief thread and it looks like I posted almost the exact same sentiments five years ago! Haha...my passion for Neon Maniacs still burns strong! Last edited by PrestonXI; 04-30-2019 at 11:26 PM. |

They did! They got her and a bunch of other cast members on video; you can see her all grown up on their Facebook page. Unfortunately, that was a long time ago (2016ish) and they've gone pretty radio silent. Their last update was about a new Hercules release or something in 2018. And sometime before that I remember seeing them respond to a comment saying they were still planning on releasing all their announced projects, but I don't see a lot of activity on their social media now. I'm tempted to join just to ask for an update. Maybe someone reading this who's already on FB would like to take the lead there and report back to us. ![]() Ha ha Same! This is funny - I literally watched this over the weekend. I had hesitated with the Code Red disc based on the price...but I remember how the film had always stuck with me. I was hanging out with some friends last night and we happened to go by SciFi (if you'll remember, they actually used to run some very strange "fare" on Friday nights after midnight..same way I saw Xtro for the first time). I happened to witness the scene where the main actress is in the pool towards the beginning of the film, is being watched, then it begins to rain blood - for whatever reason it creeped me out and I had to buy the film when it hit bluray. It's not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but I've certainly rewatched it multiple times - it's strange, creepy and entertaining in the same way DEATH SPA is.

Neon Maniacs is low key some of the most fun 80’s cheese around. Hope it finds new life on blu again soon.
