I started watching on Netflix streaming, and noticed early on the music is pitched higher than it should be (Marvin Gaye and Rolling Stones). I'm not sure if all audio is sped up. Is this an issue with Netflix, or how the movie is?

Big Chill /St. Elmos fire ....two different generations. And nothing alike for any type of comparison. For me the big chill was ok..but since I was a teen in the early 80's this was more for my parents; so at the time I couldnt connect with the central theme. However I did like the soundtrack.

why do you have to connect with the characters to like a movie?
Ok, i take a random Bluray from your list: "Gone with the wind".
Do you connect with the characters?
Anyway, just was wondering..

I saw this film for the first time I think some months ago and loved it..
(though i couldn't connect probably to any character either.. )
except for the general notion "where we're heading", "what we want out of life" etc..

[Show spoiler] Coming to grips with mortality. I was not thiking about death at 16, I was too busy partying and getting laid.

Oh, I see.
I didn't think that was the central theme.
I thought that was as an excuse for the plot to unfold and see the characters of all those people..

I watched this today for the first time in anticipation of the CC release and really enjoyed it. It didn't feel very dated to me and the soundtrack, as everyone has said, accents the film and its scenes very nicely. Great cast and chemistry; the drama wasn't forced for the most part, and I'm very interested in the new transfer. I wish the B&N sale would extend a bit, but November will be here before you know it.

I'm hoping to snag a copy of this at B&N before the sale is over. Is $39.99 the MSRP for this title?

This could be a little tricky given the street date is 07/29 and the B&N sale ends 07/28.

Watching this now, I realized they could totally do a modern-day remake of it right now. It could be called The Big Chillax, and would star the hot 30-somethings of today, featuring hits from the late '90s (when the characters would've been in college) such as Limp Bizkit's "Nookie".... of course I'm joking.

I feel like I was right on the heels of this generation ... not in the middle of it, but right at the very tail end ... like the kid brother tagging along with the big brother. I'm really looking forward to seeing this again. I have great memories of it ... and the music! My thanks also, to Pro-B for the enthusiastic review. Gets the juices flowing.

I haven't seen this movie. Is this about a group of people who were idealistic hippies with dreams of changing the world when they were young, but now that they're in their 30s and 40s they have high paying corporate jobs and feel guilty that they betrayed their youth ideals?

If the B&N sale had been extended by one day, I would've owned this. Love love love this movie.

Never really connected with The Big Chill, probably because I'm a generation younger than these characters (I was born in the early '70's). For this same reason, I never really got into the '80's TV series 30-something, which was about people from this same generation...

That being said, I've only seen the film once, years ago. And, as I've gotten older, I do appreciate the themes of looking back on your youth & questioning your decisions....and thinking about what you have/haven't accomplished....So, I should probably give the film another chance...

I also think it's unfair to compare this film to St. Elmo's Fire (1985), which was a great film in it's own right; SEF was about early 20-something's who had just graduated college, and were trying to figure out what to do with their lives. Whereas The Big Chill was about friends in their mid 30's who were looking back at their late '60's/early '70's college years with nostalgia. The age difference between both groups was significant; The characters in TBC appeared to be roughly 10-15 years older than the ones in SEF...

This will sound lame, but I resisted buying this because I'm not a fan of Criterion dual format packaging. They are always well made, no doubt but I just like the plastic case option.

But the review just came out with pix of it in their standard clear cases. I hope they go this route in the future.

Anyone know of other dual format releases that come in their standard style clear plastic case?

Same exact story here (born 1972). My mom loved the film, and I adore Jeff Goldblum, but I've just never been able to work up any enthusiasm to see it. I don't know what it is. I really love EASY RIDER, the other film than defined the boomer generation (its younger self, versus THE BIG CHILL's interest in its older self), but this one just seems...I dunno...too "white people", if that's makes any sense.
