I'd be very surprised(and quite happy) if we got one...I will remain hopeful!
I think BB will probably get a steelbook like they did for the first film.

Richard Armitage said in a recent video interview that what they shot of Mirkwood was substantially longer than what is in the theatrical film. They shot the river scene and Bombur falling in and it causing him to fall asleep. Based on that there is probably a good 10 minutes or more added to the Mirkwood sequence.

me too, even in the theatrical cut, those scenes with Beorn seem very truncated.

And we had to kill the pacing of the film to do it? Gandalf already knew it was the Witch King's sword. He could have gone straight to Dol Goldur and saved us the pointless side trip.

Call it benefit of the internet, but I knew FELLOWSHIP was getting an Extended Edition before the theatrical cut hit DVD.

at one point in the theatrical cut of DOS you can see the dwarves carrying Bombur on a makeshift stretcher . Apparently in a deleted sequence he falls into a river and needs to carried for a bit.

Unless you followed DVD release news back then and were aware New Line and Peter Jackson announced well in advance of the Theatrical Edition DVD of FotR that there would be a subsequent Extended Edition set.

I did, and I knew.

People crying scam? Everyone knows how Pete Jackson does with these films and the LOTR series. If you don't want to double dip, no one is forcing you. Oh, and spoiler alert: I bet a big box set of all 6 films is coming.

A lot of you misunderstood my post. My aplogies, Wrong choice of words I guess....What I tried to say was: Yes, we all know that there's going to be an extended edition down the road.....but why not release that extended edition along with the already released theatrical cut via seamless branching? That way whoever wants to own both cuts, can do so without having to purchase two separate releases?

And by the way, I do like these movies, It's just not something that I would want to rewatch.

I would feel bad if anything carried over between releases. Since the Theatrical has one set of features and the Extended has its own amazing set of features and nothing crosses over, it doesn't feel like a rip off. If you are a casual fan, the theatrical is just fine. If you want much, much more, then you spring for the extended.

I honestly don't know why this comes up for every single release. It's not you Cortiz, but there are people who go on a giant rant that they didn't know the Extended was coming.

Really looking forward to this.

I wonder what the WETA statue will be. I'd love a little Smaug statue, that would be so cool. I can't really think of what else they could do.

I also REALLY hope they put a nice insert with the chapter listing and bonus feature listing like they did with the LotR EEs (that was one thing I thought was sorely lacking with the AUJ EE release).

The extended cuts aren't finished until around their disk based release. Releasing the theatrical cuts keeps the hype going year round and the excitement going for their release. It'd be nice, but I'd rather have each cut of the film get a separate disk the way it does now.

Definitely looking forward to this release! 25 minutes sounds perfect and I'm sure we'll see:

* More Beorn
*More Mirkwood (Bombur enchanted river/white stag confirmed)
* Elves Festival of Starlight
* Much more Laketown
* Bilbo/Smaug and the stolen cup

I believe it takes a lot longer to assemble the Extended Editions together (new edit of the film, putting together 8 hours of documentary footage, etc. all while they are still in production with the current film), so instead of making everyone wait an entire year, they release the Theatrical Edition earlier. They are kind of forced to anyway because it gets released on VOD and iTunes, etc. they can't not have a hard copy out there. There are a lot of people in the world that are happy with just the Theatrical versions and they are done and happy. And there are some with money to burn that will just buy both. I love these movies, but I'm patient enough to wait for the EEs when they come out. Plenty of other movies out there to keep me busy, plus my whole life outside of Blu-Ray Land.

I have to say I'm usually not a fan of things being explained to me, but I actually like seeing what Gandalf was up to when he disappeared from time to time. I remember reading the book and thinking where the hell is Gandalf.

The theatrical release of Fellowship had a preview of the extended cut. That was printed on the back, not a surprise inside after you purchased. At any rate, the supplements were announced in advance and I was aware of (and planning on buying) both editions of Fellowship well before the theatrical release hit stores. When they tell you up front, it's hardly a scam.

I don't think the festival will be added. It just doesn't fit with all the other changes that have been made. I was hoping the dwarves arriving at Beorn's would be like the book though. I see why they changed that.

I hope we get 25 minutes more of Thorin/Smaug lip tap-dancing, river of gold surfing, plenty more random orcs, fat Legolas blue-laser-eyeball fancy footwork, made up subserviant woodland Silvan elf-dwarf love triangle/Arwen wanna-be glowing-healer crap.

Actually, I hope we get more Bilbo: The Hobbit, Beorn, Mirkwood, and old Dale.

This.

As much as I loved the barrel sequence, those go-pro shots were awful.

There are about five instances of those and they each last less than a second each. To me, they kind of convey a "live action" feel and don't really bother me at all. IMO, that's one of the lesser problems with the film.
