It's gonna be sappy - for this particular type of film - if Senor Spielberg is involved. They'll need to pad the film out a bit too, which I have no doubt they'll do.
[Show spoiler]Not sure how they'll deal with the decidedly quaint Queen of England plot line; will they remain faithful to the book on this front?

I didnt think the movie was great by any means but I think it could of worked with someone other than Johnny Depp, Depp used to be a really good actor back in his "Fear and Loathing in las vegas" days he was so good in that but he was just so bad in Charlie and the Chocolate factory, whenever he spoke in that voice and came on screen I got that feeling of I want to switch this off because I literally feel embarrassed for him I dont know how Tim Burton was okay with that performance while filming that. He couldnt of said "hey johnny maybe tone it down a bit and go with something more sublte". Kind of the same feeling I have when he comes on screen in Tusk.

'Cos Raoul Duke was a subtle performance.

I disagree, I think there were bigger problems than Johnny Depp.

I agree. Two things that worked against the movie were the Wonka's father subplot, and Depp's performance. Take those two things out and I'd say that the 2005 movie is superior to the 70's version.

Nah, I'd still prefer the Willy Wonka version. It's just a classic.

Why would he play the role subtle when Hunter S. Thompson was anything but that? I seem to recall hunter really liked depp after watching the special features and listening to the commentary and said he did a great job if I recall but its been awhile since I watched them. Ive lurked here long enough before I signed up to recognize you're name though so I get you're just being a contrarian for the sake of it.

Yeah just the boat ride scene alone would make it superior to any updated version, Gene Wilder was awesome in that part as well as the whole movie, I loved how he could go from a Jovial nice guy to sinister in such a subtle way throughout the movie.

I think you've misjudged me, personally. I was just pointing out how you were bothered by the fact that Depp was not subtle in CATCF while praising his performance as Raoul Duke, which is alltogether not subtle. And I don't recall Willy Wonka being a very subtle character in any rendition, in fact quite theatrical and melodramatic (In different ways but still).

I personally like both takes on Wonka.

Fair enough it just seemed like a drive by flippant remark but I get it can be hard to read tone through text so if I did misunderstand my bad.

CGI isn't looking particularly great. But it could be a surprise hit, at least here in the UK, it'll probably rope in a pretty wide audience from young kids to the grey pound.

Watched it on mute and I got some of those nostalgic feels. Might check this out in theaters if the reviews are good. CGI looks fine to me, for a trailer at least.

How do people stand these movies where 95% of the screen is CG?

I'm excited, even if the CGI is underdeveloped. Still plenty of time to iron out the kinks, and there's a good base there to work off of.
