$20.97 turned into $27.00 after s&h and taxes. I must've slept through the price hikes. Sheesh.

Yikes! How much are you paying for shipping over a year? Is it time to get Prime? I didn't even notice until one year I did the math and realized that because it had become impossible to buy things in stores on release day, I was buying so much at Amazon that I'd spent like $30 more than Prime membership on shipping.

I dropped Prime earlier this year. It served me well for a time but Amazon's high prices on cult titles (which is what I mostly buy) turned me off enough that I didn't see a need for the service anymore. I now buy most of the stuff I want from either blowitoutahere or Diabolik DVD.

I wonder if there's any chance they'll include this recent documentary on the making of the film:

I would love to see this title get some bonus materials to put it in historical context.

Australia Order goes thru Amazon??

Hi. New member from Australia here.

I just went to pre-order "On The Beach" from this site. But I was redirected to Amazon. Don't know if that's normal.

Anyway, I went ahead with the order and when I got to the final stage I got a warning that the disc was Region 1. Yet on this site it says "Region A (B,C untested)".

So, what do I do now?

Thanks.

This website is just an informational site and a chat forum. The links to order always redirect to Amazon.

Amazon US always says every disc is Region 1 only, probably for legal reasons. There's no way to know for sure what region code this BD will be until someone has a copy in hand and tests it for us. I'm sure someone will report back soon, the disc comes out in just a couple of weeks.

James Luckard, for some reason the forum won't let me reply direct, says I haven't got access or privielges or whatever, (even though I was able to post my question here yesterday). Lot of mucking around this morning trying to log on. Strange. I've posted a query in the "registration problems" page.

Anyway, thanks for your reply. I'll wait until after the release date and ask again, see if anybody has tested the disc for Australia.

Thanks.

EDIT: Obviously, I can reply but not 'quote and reply'.

Anyway.

Thanks for the review, JMK!

Yes, disappointing news on the extras front.

I know films are mostly sold on Blu-ray as consumables, but I do wish more studios would put some effort into their value as pieces of culture and history as well. I would have thought the value of a release like this would be increased significantly with some material about the context of the Cold War, and even something addressing the history of this film being such a grim flick yet marketed as a must-see. Perhaps they assume the cognoscenti would already know enough of such things, but those of us who just appreciate good filmmaking might also appreciate being "in the know" as well.

As one of them foreign types, the only Kino-Lorber title I have is the Buster Keaton set. So, is barebones a normal state for Kino releases?

I'm just glad that this film has gotten released on Blu-ray and will soon be part of my collection. The transfer is apparently very good, it's in widescreen and the cover is gorgeous - all the basic elements are here. Sure beats the heck out of that ancient DVD
