Another not so well known trick.

Turn it off via the main switch at the rear. Hold the eject button and turn the main switch on at the same time and the cooling fan will start in reverse. The amount of dust blown out of my machine the first time was scary. It will run for 20- 30 seconds then turn itself off again.

I do it once a week or so now.

Runs quieter and feels heaps cooler.

I've been told that half of the returned machines are fixed in this way.

Trust me it works.

Mate who told me about it was told over the phone from a Sony tech to try it before sending his back.

I think I need to try this since my fans constantly come on. I guess like emptying vacuum cleaner, i'll be doing this outside

Definately works on 40gig and 60gig models tho.

What were the concerns with the fan going in reverse? I've done it maybe 5 or 6 times now with no adverse results.

it might work on all, i thought i remembered it not working on some models tho. who knows..been awhile since this has been brought up. forgot all about it lol.

the worries probably come from people who think the fans can be damaged. i cant imagine it being a problem or sony would have taken the 'feature' out

Im gonna be having my first child around May and this would be an excellent way to let my folks in Florida see the kid. (yes, I convinced my dad to buy a PS3 a while back! now I think I know what to get him for christmas. )
Gratz on the kid!

I wish everyone in my family had a PS3 to do this. I currently do it by PC with some grandparents and great-grandparents - it really is a good way to keep in touch.

Someone mentioned that there was a newer version of the PS eye? Anyone care to elaborate on that? Any significant differences?

I heard the fan trick doesn't work on 60GB models... and was added when the 40GB models came out.
The big debate was that there was another "trick" that people would do that actually would hurt the PS3, which they would do to the 60GB cause it lacked that fan mode. It involved turning the PS3 upside down, which you should never do. So don't do it.
But really, I think that was the big debate.
IF it is true that the 60GB model has the trick you mentioned, I will find out tonight when I try it on mine.

Another nice feature that is overlooked... folders.
Lots of people want folders to organize downloaded games, demos, videos, etc. Well you can do it just like you can with photos and music... by using albums.
Just go to the game and video menus and use the triangle button to sort by Album, then just go to each file/game and hit triangle again. Inside this menu, go to Information, and give the album a name. Choose the same name for all the PS3 games, PS3 Demos, PSone games, Movies, TV shows, etc. that you want. While this is not as complex as it could be, it does give simple folders to organize things in and will clean up the XMB considerably.

Yeah, I believe that is correct since it doesn't work on either of my 60-gig PS3s.

http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-134168.aspx

indeed this only works on the 40GB model!
Perhaps also the new 80GB, I haven't heard.
But this does NOT work on the 20 or 60GB models.
The rejected and damaging cleaning method for this is the turn it upside down while it is on. This will damage your PS3 and not clean it correctly. Only 40Gb model PS3s (and possibly the new 80GB) have the built-in fan clean mode.

I know, me too.. i wonder why they don't just add a firmware upgrade or something that will let us use that.
But I haven't really had any trouble with mine. Once a month, just spray out the vents with compressed air and you should be fine.
