This is most likely going to be a day 1 buy, this has been anticipated by me for a long time! Nice piece of news for the first official day of summer!

Never imagined this would be coming to blu-ray. One of my favorite horror films as a kid, can't wait to pick it up. The next few months have some unexpected horror/sci-fi blu's for me, there's this and 'Leviathan.' I can't wait. Now I'm eagerly anticipating 'Hell Night' to be released. If only.

All we have right now is an Amazon preorder and release date. Starz/Anchor Bay hasn't announced any details yet.

The parents didn't need to see the film. They were objecting to it mostly because of the tv commercials Tri-Star was running in primetime showing a maniac Santa Claus with an axe in an R-rated horror film - thus, terrifying many parents' children who may have been watching Happy Days or whatever. The protests started and it hit the news, and Tri-Star succumbed and pulled it from theaters. And it wasn't even released nationally. It opened in New England and on the east coast, maybe some other cities, never made it to Los Angeles.

I think all the hoopla and controversy is much more interesting than the film itself.

Pretty much: The parents groups were protesting the ads (c'mon, THESE were the ads, and you freakin' know it! ) which gave the gullible the "real Santa" idea, and all they wanted was to pull the advertising.
The critics--especially including Siskel, Ebert and Maltin--leapt on the "If it bleeds, we can kill it" idea of blowing the controversy out of proportions to show that the entire genre had now apparently overstepped the line, gave the impression that the movie was being "banned" rather than Tri-Star bowing to parent pressure, and tried to use the movie as an easy-target whipping boy. (Especially since the "calendar killer" theme was what was annoying most mainstream folks about the genre at the time and the movie's premise seemed like an easy symbol.) At least most of them had seen the movie, but they weren't too specifically concerned about the fact that this one in particular wasn't very good.

As for this new cheap Wes Craven-wannabe poster, note the "1.4" after the title. Like most cheap indie slasher that fell up for grabs, I'm guessing it's had three other owners and cuts since then.
It's actually the "campy" poster from a revival theater showing four years ago (also featuring "that gem of a sequel"), as part of their "Garbage Day" fest. I, er, don't think it'll end up on the disk.

Quote:
On a side note, Silent Night, Deadly Night also opened the same day as another little movie some may have heard of called A Nightmare on Elm Street, which SNDN actually outgrossed that first weekend before the controversy really fired up and got it pulled from theaters.
Although NOES was only from a little struggling indie distributor called New Line, and could only play B-theaters, while SNDN got the big theaters and the headlines.

So many good movies coming out on my birthday. First Ghostbusters 1 & 2, then Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and now this.

Sweet, another 80s slasher blur-ray added to my collection!
Every year Blu-ray has been bringing horror fans some awesome surprises! The Final Terror, Curtains, X-Ray - all films I never thought I'd see in beautiful hi-def widescreen.

Will not get it if it's only the R version, I've only ever seen it uncut.
same here, if it's the R rated cut I'll unfortunately stick to the DVD unless there's enough special features (doubtful) to justify a purchase for that alone.

The thing is, even if the quality is lousy on the unrated stuff, it's better to include it versus the version that was screened in 1984 (and this past year). If My Bloody Valentine can do it, so can SNDN. Bring on the unrated version!

Awesome. I've never seen this one, but I'm aware of its reputation as a horror classic. I'm hoping to pick up one of these.

Scream Factory (for the Halloween set at least).

I'll pick this up at some point. Heard a lot of things about it.
