I don't want two formats to co-exist. Hopefully Toshiba and HD DVD will fall off the face of the earth shortly and the better format will prevail.

It’s nice to see Tosh changing their tune from the usual “we will win this war” BS. Maybe they are planning on backing out of this war but I wouldn’t hold my breath. They are bent on destroying the HDM market and they are doing a fantastic job at it. They are so invested now that I just don’t see any reason why they would give up.

Ok ok ok.. lets not all get too excited about this. We are reading too much into this. Toshiba said nothing about giving up, but seems to admit there is a possibility they won't win. This is nothing new and we should not jump to conclusions.

I believe you may be on to something. They can't win being the only manufacturer. I have been saying this for awhile now. HD-DVD will co-exist in the short term with dual formt players. Consumers will demand the quality that Blu-ray delivers from movies and HD-DVD studios will release on Blu-ray eventually. This war will end with a whimper and not a bang.

This is just their next phase of accepting the ultimate truth. They lost.

Wake up Toshiba,.. You lost.

Can you go away now so we can get all the studios on Blu?

Can Toshiba go it alone producing sub $100 players? Blu-ray will have more manufacturers making profits from Blu-ray. Will Toshiba really want to sit that market out? I don't think so...

No other CE Manufacturers will want to join in the mess of HD-DVD players Toshiba has made. There is no profit in a business where there are already $499 players marked down to $99! Toshiba has gone with the short term strategy and is digging themselves into a hole.. all they can do is back out cause no one else will want to join them down there.

Yep.. this *movie* format war has always really been about MS stopping the PS3 from becoming the multi-media hub in your home..think what it really means for the *console* wars if there is no confusion over Blu-ray as the standard going forward .. the d/l *only* scenario is a red herring in comparison to that goal..and that goal is necessary to facilitate the second goal of expanded d/l's and strangle the studio's distributions options in the long run...

Content is king..unless you can't distribute it to the HDTV sitting on the other end. Then the toll booth is king...and the PS3 drastically weakens that scenario for MS - on multiple levels.

And oh..dual format players still serves MS goal in regards to the PS3 and leaves us with crappy bit starved encodes as the lowest common denominator.

Btw my wife actually wondered why the hell Oceans 13 looked so lousy the other night - it was that noticeable compared to what she has been getting used to on Blu-ray. She is just a J6P when it comes to this stuff .. so for her to say something is quite telling on how poor this transfer was. Normally she would just assume something is wrong with her and not say a peep since it's not her "thing".

Exactly. They wrote their own epitaph with this cheap player BS. As a hardware company, there really is no money to be made from this. Anyone would be foolish to pay more than the firesale price. The studios may go a bit longer in making movies, but something tells me a few Spielberg movies may see the light of day on Blu-ray.

This is very reassuring news to Blu-ray owners. Toshiba must KNOW that it is incapable of winning, for them to make that statement. I got some Blus to watch this weekend

I'd be surprised if they are just learning this, they've got to be watching the disc sales as well as Hardware sales...

Has anyone taken this up with the HD DUDs lately? Just asking, because I'd like to know what they think about the situation.

I'm wondering if the Stringer comments were the beginning of public overtures regarding this mess. Toshiba is no longer countering with talking points, but talking coexistance. This might allow them to enter the Blu-ray hardware market with a dual player. I don't expect them to give up HD-DVD completely.

The HD-DVD sites will cover this up like it was never said. On the other hand, the Stringer comments were probably stickied.

This is true about the Stringer comments, but I still want to know how they feel...I'm sure Kosty and the gang will do their best to cover it up, but it is out there for everyone to see.

I just hope WB goes Blu, and then Uni... leaving the weak Paramount all high and dry.... BD will win this, it is just a matter of time. Toshiba can be in denial all they want.
Very well said, and Toshiba just surrendered, I'm sure they see exclusivity a great idea because there getting their a$$ kicked. This is the time to put the nail in the coffin.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like both Tosh and Sony have softened up a bit. It might indicate the prelude of a compromise. On the otherhand we might be reading too much into it.

BD doesn't compromise, and Betamax didn't compromise, I hope we hold to either we win this or we lose this (yeah right) either way we hold true.

Toshiba can't afford to pay the entire industry for support indefinitely.

If you were in Warner's shoes, why would you go HD-DVD exclusive at this point? Paramount just go paid $50m for 18-months of exclusivity, and Dreamworks got $100m.

Warner is bigger than both of them, and now the precedent has been set, so they would be stupid to do something for free that they could ask for $100m+ to do. Their shareholders would cruxify them and they live and die by the shareholders.
