The quality of the scan is better than expected too, about as good as one might hope for. But. But but but... Why has there been no de-spot on the preview version of the film?!!! We're not talking about a little bit of atmospheric speckle here and there but rather a veritable plague of dust and damage - the elements seeming to have suffered quite a bit even since the previous DVD release. Criterion have an MTI system in house, so why oh why didn't they clean this up?! One expects this sort of corner-cutting from the likes of, say, Olive, but not from a label with Criterion's reputation and resources. As for the theatrical version, this doesn't look as good as Fox's release from Germany.

Definite room for improvement if, say, Masters of Cinema were to take this on.
First off, great username. Secondly, I agree with you that this release COULD have been better. However, both versions are masterpieces and the only scene I really like better in the pre-release cut is the ending kiss (or lack thereof). Fox's version looks slightly better due to higher bitrate, but it's pretty damn close and the movie is far too good to nitpick about minor PQ issues. The Fox release doesn't have nearly as many extras, and the new ones that Criterion produced for this edition are pretty great.

The deluxe Arrow edition (with Frontier Marshall) is only £5.99 (!) at Amazon UK, though it's currently OOS.

Link. (Thanks to WiggyWig for initially posting this deal in the UK forums.)

I wonder when Disney will finally allow Criterion to upgrade this to UHD, or when Criterion will try to do so. I have no idea when. It will happen eventually for a classic of this size, and I really hope it's sooner rather than later, but I feel it's gonna be a long wait. Maybe 5 or even 10 years, who knows? I personally hope we don’t have to wait more than 5 years. I want to be optimistic that we won’t have to wait more than that, and I will always have good hopes.

The fact this film's 4K restoration, made back in 2014, was done with the support of The Film Foundation by Scorsese also gives me more hope. His foundation has supported the Disney 4K restorations last year of Cavalcade, Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm and Spellbound, the former two being 1930s Fox films, and the latter being owned by ABC. This says nothing about physical media releases per se, but Scorsese definitely wouldn’t want such restorations to never be released to the public, and being exclusive to theaters screening classics.

If only you knew the half of it, poor naive circa 2014 MifuneFan.

His post was in 2014. Disney didn’t buy Fox till many years later. I wouldn’t say he was wrong.

Also, have you seen my two previous comments here in this thread?

Neither of our posts were about Disney or Fox.

So, what were they about? Criterion's Citizen Kane UHD packaging?

If my personal Criterion sales purchases are any proof, it seems that the majority of Criterion releases these days come with a leaflet instead of a booklet.

Maybe I just buy all the "wrong ones", but still quite a change from where they were at in 2014.

I apologize, I had misread the posts you and MifuneFan did, and I jumped to conclusions. I got myself tangled into a non-sense mess regarding your post and MifuneFan's. Completely lost, no idea what I was saying in my replies to you.
