My Onkyo TX-NR818 will not output any sound when I turned it on this morning, and a search led me to this thread.

I see that some of you that have had your unit repaired were in the US, but when I follow the link I can't find anything for US customers. Is there a different link? What is the process for US customers?

Thanks!

EDIT: Found it. Here's the link for North American customers:

https://repair.onkyousa.com/na/

I'm now waiting for the shipping box and pre-paid lable to arrive.

Question for you guys.

Lately, my 606 has been cutting out. It will flash out and I'll see "no supported signal" on my tv for a second or it will go completely black and then back to what I was watching. Both the sound and the picture will be gone for that second. I assume this is the HDMI board failing?

From what I read here, it seems to be more permanent than my issue but I wanted to make sure before I started going through this process.. Any ideas?

ideas, see if they will fix it under the program. my 8050, after 5 years, stopped putting out sound and gave me the "initiating" message for some inputs. it was out of warranty, I took the chance, entered my info and they said they will fix it. I just received my shipping box with packing materials and prepaid shipping label in it today. worse case, your model isn't covered but you won't know that until you fill out the info, you will find out inside of 5 minutes if your eligible or not. it's totally free for the repair and the shipping round trip.

how's that for an idea.

I wasn't asking for an idea on what to do. I was asking if this is the same HDMI problem that Onkyo's have been plagued with.
But thanks so much for the snark. Much appreciated.

my point was, we can't tell you if that is the nature of your problem (we are not Onkyo service techs and we don't have it in front of us to test it if we were) and you should input your info to see if they will fix it.

proud my snark is still recognized!

so, now that all of that is out of the way, did you input your info yet and if so, is your receiver eligible for the free repair by Onkyo? I do hope it is eligible. please keep us posted.

So after 3.5 years my 818 has got this dreaded issue =(. Got home today and turned it on, video but no sound. The speaker indicators were not showing up on the display, no sound even from the test tone menu. Since I bought it as a refurb from Accessories4Less I was in doubt that this program would cover it but went ahead and entered my info and it said it qualifies thankfully. Awaiting my shipping materials now.

So for anyone who has had the repair done, how was the process? Is it still working? Also I read a thread on AVS forum and one poster showed pictures showing that Onkyo is replacing the HDMI board with new boards that have an updated TI DSP chip with better specs so hopefully the issue won't occur again, can anyone here confirm this? The picture the guy posted showed that if you got the new chip it should have a "U" on it made with what appears to be marker and a white label with the word "new" on it.

My 818 had given me intermittent problems for the year or so, but a reset would always get it working again. But when the audio stopped working for good in July I found out about the recall/repair.

The process was quick and painless (other than the pain of having to remove the receiver). From what I recall, the turn around time for the repair was only a day or two. The receiver has been working fine since then, and no longer has any intermittent loss of audio.

I was also curious about exactly what they do for the repair, so I kind of regretted not snapping a picture of the internals before sending it off.

I don't think so. I think it is based strictly on your serial number, and whether Onkyo considers it to be one of the effected units.

Yea the only thing I had to do was enter the model and serial number and indicate wether it was purchased new or refurb, no proof of purchase required (yet anyways lol...).

Thanks for the reply though Edgar. I hope it goes as painlessly for me, still nervous they might try something slick since it's a refurb unit and technically out of warranty. I was devastated when I couldn't get the sound to work, no amount of resetting, power drain, letting it sit for a while or anything would fix it, and just happened out of the blue. Never had a problem before So glad I still had my trusty Yamaha rx-v667 in storage for backup.

fingers crossed mine continues to treat me well......I had this issue w/my old Onkyo as well.

but I was able to get that one taken care of and then gave it to my old man when I upgraded to the 818.

Are you using speakers hooked up in another room?

Just wanted to report I'm extremely pleased with this warranty service. Submitted my request on the 1st, received my box on the 7th (I shipped it same day), and got the repaired unit back today (would have been yesterday but it needed a signature and somehow I missed FedEx). It's working perfectly and I can confirm as I showed above they are replacing the HDMI boards with ones that have an updated chip. Not sure if you can see this very well (don't want to take the hood off for picture) but you can see it looks just like the one above:

so I bought a TX-NR818 back in 12/12. I would assume mine is going to fall into the date range of the faulty units.

does mine have to be experiencing issues or can I head things off and send it in to be repaired to head off any issues??

If the model you have qualifies for this program, yes you can send it ahead of time to have the chip/board replaced.

My TX-NR646 crashed during the firmware update via net. It was working made it to 52% and locked up. Retried and get error 0-81. Was told to take the unit to a service center. Unit needs a new board. Unit is out of warranty. Onkyo doesn't care.

They don't care their update crashed my unit, they don't care I'm out $400, they don't care it's going to cost $400 to fix it.

I don't care for Onkyo anymore.

just went through the headache of being able to turn my recv'r around to get the serial # from the back......all of my cables have been tied together so I don't have a lot of play any more.......entered it into the site and it qualifies.

makes me feel a little better knowing when/if it does happen, i'll be able to get it taken care of.

has anyone sent their unit in before it experienced any issues?? just wondering how that process went if anyone has done it.
