OK, here's the full press release:

Quote:
From renowned writer/producer Glen A. Larson, the creative force behind Knight Rider, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, comes the groundbreaking TV series that launched one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises in history, now available in widescreen and high definition as Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection and Battlestar Galactica: The Remastered Collection come to Blu-ray™ on May 12, 2015 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. These essential collections for Battlestar Galactica devotees include all 24 explosive episodes of Battlestar Galactica: The Original Series plus the complete 10-episode spin-off series, Galactica 1980.

Newly remastered in 16:9 widescreen presentation for the very first time, Battlestar Galactica: The Remastered Collection features both pioneering series meticulously reformatted to be optimized for the HDTV viewing experience. Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection also includes both series in 4:3 Full Frame as they were originally televised, plus the theatrical version of the premiere episode "Saga of a Star World" presented in 1.85:1 Widescreen for the ultimate collector.

This epic adventure, which provided the inspiration for the critically acclaimed 2004 Syfy reimagined series, comes with over 4 hours of bonus features, including over 3 hours of deleted scenes from Battlestar Galactica: The Original Series! These collections also includes featurettes such as "Glen Larson on the Creation of Battlestar Galactica" and "Stu Phillips: Composing the Score" with an inside look at the genesis of this remarkable production, and "Remembering Battlestar Galactica," a 45-minute retrospective documentary featuring cast and crew on the making of this ground-breaking series.

In Battlestar Galactica: The Original Series, the Twelve Colonies, hopeful for lasting peace following centuries of intense warfare, gather to sign a treaty with their dreaded enemies, the Cylons. But after an act of treachery on the eve of the ceremony, the Cylons launch a devastating surprise attack, destroying the Colonies' home planets and most of their military strength. A lone flagship battlestar, the Galactica, remains to aid the surviving colonists on their epic journey to a new home on a far-off, legendary planet—Earth.

Battlestar Galactica: The Original Series stars Richard Hatch ("The Streets of San Francisco"), Dirk Benedict ("The A Team"), Lorne Greene ("Bonanza"), Herbert Jefferson Jr. (Apollo 13), John Colicos ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), Maren Jensen ("The Love Boat"), Noah Hathaway (The Never Ending Story), Laurette Spang (Airport 1975), Tony Swartz ("Dynasty") and Terry Carter ("McCloud").

Galactica 1980: The Complete Series picks up 30 years after the events of Battlestar Galactica, as the original crew finally makes the long-anticipated descent to Earth. With time running out and the Cylons closing in on their trail, Commander Adama and the Galactica team work harder than ever to help Earth create the technology necessary for battle.

Galactica 1980: The Complete Series stars Kent McCord ("Emergency"), Barry Van Dyke ("Diagnosis Murder"), Robyn Douglass(Breaking Away) and Lorne Greene.

Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection includes:

Battlestar Galactica: The Original Series (Widescreen and Full Frame)

Weird about the aspect ratios. I guess the O.A.R. is 1.33:1 and the widescreen option is it opened up?

I would not want this to replace the original effects. That being said, it did look pretty stunning, and Galactica in general had a serious problem with re-using the same effects footage endlessly. I wouldn't mind seeing something like this sitting alongside the original effects as an option, like the original Star Trek series.

I agree the effects are very well done - and I'm a huge fan of old-time model effects work. My biggest issue has always been how much footage they reuse over and over in every battle scene. Same explosions. Same laser fire. Same ships flying in the same exact pattern every time. They rarely added anything new. That's one reason I loved the early "Gun on Ice Planet Zero" episode - at least there was some cool new effects for once - like the shuttle crashing in the snow. Or the ship of lights, which was really cool (they even reused those shots later on in another episode). Usually the series was just packed with re-used effects from the early episodes.

I just pre-ordered the definitive set. At the current price it makes sense to go for the definitive release. It's currently only $20 more than the cheaper set and includes the movie, as well as both the original series and Galactica:1980 re-framed in widescreen. 18 discs vs 8 discs. It's worth $20 for the other 10 discs. It's still rather expensive for basically one season of a very old show plus a half-season of a show most of us will not want to see more than once if that (a few episodes of Galactica:1980 are entertaining in a so-bad-it's good sort of way, and there's the excellent final episode with Starbuck, but the other half are unwatchable). But considering how many discs you get, plus tons of extras, plus the movie, and the dual aspect ratios, I guess the price isn't terrible. I like Amazon's current price far better than the list price.

I love that they are offering the series in both 4:3 and 16:9 in one set. This gives me hope that maybe this could happen for Lost in Space also. There's some heated discussion going on about the remastering of Lost in Space - they were considering what ratio to use - 4:3 as broadcast or re-framed for 16:9, which opened up the frame somewhat, but also cropped it at the same time. This would be a great way to please everybody by giving them a choice of aspect ratios.

The UK set is identical to the German release from earlier this year, so that would be a no. The UK set also doesn't include any bonus content, not even the bonus disc that was included with the German set. Additionally, none of the bonus materials mentioned for the US Blu-ray release are part of any previous release of this on Blu-ray that I've read about.

I imported the German release when it came out earlier this year always intending to purchase the set again if it were released in the US. Pre-ordered the Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection [Blu-ray] from Amazon.com just a few minutes ago. Very excited to see this purchase isn't going to basically be a double dip for me. Will be awesome to own the series on Blu-ray in both Full Frame (OAR) and in Widescreen (...opened up). May 2015 can't get here soon enough!

Do you know this for sure? The UK version was just released by Universal just this week while the German version was released by a company called Kohl i believe is the name. So the UK version should be identical to the one Universal is bringing to the US. At least to the remastered version.

Not true. The German blu-ray set has all the same deleted scenes and documentaries as the US set likely will. All the US DVD extras were included with the German blu-ray release. It also contains the German 8mm home video versions of all 3 Galactica European theatrical films, which the US set is sure to leave off.

I do own the German set. I must have overlooked the bonus content offered on the first 9 discs. Perhaps had somehing to do with the fact I don't read German and was only focused at the time on watching the actual episodes. That being said, the bonus content offered on the German Release is documented over at TheDigitalBits here. And again, I don't own the UK set, but there's been no mention over in the UK thread or anywhere else that I've found which indicates the UK release is anything other than the German release minus the 10th disc, the DVD of Galacticon 2003. Perhaps someone that owns the UK set will chime in and confirm.

So, are we basically waiting for confirmed answers on two items with regard to the new UK set:

1. Is it OAR or widescreen?
2. Is it region free?

Just pre-ordered the Definitive set!! I have the complete remake series (UK edition), and Caprica (French edition), plus Blood and Chrome. This is a "must buy" for me.

I grew up with the original series and had all of the action figures as a kid, so this one was a no-brainer. I can't wait to watch it again, though I'm scared to watch Galactica 1980 again after all these years!! I doubt even nostalgia will help me sit through that show again.

If the movie version is any indication the series will be cropped into widescreen but I guess it's not impossible that they went back to the negatives and got more out of them.

The "Remastered" set offers only the newly-cropped 16x9 (1.78:1) versions of the episodes, whereas the "Definitive" set offers those cropped versions PLUS the episodes in their original aspect ratio of 4x3 (1.33:1).

They got me. I'm a purist and need the OAR in all things, so I'm shelling out the extra bucks.

OK - great that these original BG Blu sets have been officially announced for US release next year. Several comments:

-I think both the Definitive version & the Re-mastered version are quite overpriced. The non-Amazon prices for these are $150 & $119, respectively. This is too much $ for a season & a half of a TV series, even if it is on Blu. The discounted Amazon prices are a little easier to swallow, but IMHO these are still too much $ for what you're getting. I know this show has a large following, but full seasons of modern TV series on Blu aren't going for nearly this much. These are basically 2007-2009 Blu TV season prices!

- That all being said, I'm leaning toward getting the Re-mastered version. It's less $, and I don't care to see the show in full-screen; and, I'm not going to take the time to watch the series in both formats. Plus, I like the more chrome-ish/metal color to the Re-mastered version Box. That being said, the red design of the Definitive version box is nice as well...

-I don't hate Galactica: 1980 as much as some other fans; sure, it's dated these days (possibly even more than the regular series), but IMHO that's part of it's charm. I have fond memories of watching the show as a elementary-school age kid back in the day, and it was nice to see a "sequel" to BG where they finally found Earth. At the time, I was dissapointed that Apollo & Starbuck weren't on the show, but IIRC that was explained somehow.

When re-watching the DVD's of this 10-episode series several years ago, it was interesting to see the humanoid Cylon(s) on the show - since there weren't any on the regular '78-'79 series. I can't help but think that these humanoid Cylons somehow "inspired" the even more human-like Cylons in the excellent 200X re-imagined BG series...

Like others, my favorite episode was the last one which revealed Starbuck's fate. Superb episode, and I always got the impression it was filmed with the other episodes in the original '78-'79 series, and when the show got cancelled they didn't have any place to put this - until Galactica: 1980...

I agree about the price - the list price is far too expensive. They're basically charging us for 2 seasons plus 2 half-seasons since we're getting both series in both aspect ratios. We are getting 18 discs so that's a lot of content but how many fans will be watching ti both ways? Most fans will likely have a favorite aspect ratio and stick to that, never touching the other discs.

One thing I don't like - fans who want the original aspect ratio (most fans I would image) will have to pay more for the definitive set as the basic set only contains the cropped episodes. I don't like that practice at all. You're being forced to buy the more expensive set if you want the original aspect ratio.

Good points. However, I'm puzzled about the "cropped" widescreen aspect ratio: Does this mean that if you watch the widescreen version of BG on a widescreen TV, the picture will only take up a small portion in the middle of the screen, and you will lose some of the picture on the top & sides? I have seen "cropped" widescreen TV show/movies in the past & they look abysmal on a widescreen set.

However, "cropped" could instead mean that that they will take the full-screen version of BG and expand it so that it will fill up an entire widescreen set, but you will still lose some of the picture on the top & sides.

The reason I ask is because I've seen the original BG recently & in some cases I saw it in the expanded widescreen format - and, the widescreen versions I saw filled up the entire widescreen set.

Hopefully we'll get confirmation/clarification on this as the time gets closer for the release. I would hate to fork over good $ for the Re-mastered version and have the widescreen picture only take up a small portion of my large HD widescreen set...

Widescreen versions will likely have similar width but a lot cropped top and bottom, filling a HD screen with no black bars. Exactly like the theatrical version disc, but that had good reason to be cropped to widescreen.

I'm in the UK and picked up that set today. It's in the original 4:3 and region free.
