Seeing this tonight, apparently will be an IMAX 3D screening (yes!!!). I think the embargo won't be lifted until at least tomorrow since the email invite to the screening said I'm not allowed to review the film on social media (whereas some advanced screenings have given no such restrictions, and The Book Thief even said social media reviews were "encouraged").

The Movie is fun (saw it Monday night at a press screening- though they mix in audience members to give the press a sense of how they react to the movie). Certainly a bunch of problems in the script (thin characters, awkward dialogue, weak comic relief), but it's probably the most enjoyable of the JP sequels, tons of nostalgia for the first film, loved seeing a full working park, and there are some impressive set pieces.
The 3D is solid enough, but I wish they were a little more aggressive with it; one thing I really liked about Mad Max, which I saw on the same IMAX screen, was how strong they went with some 3D moments, obviously that big shot near the end but a couple other times as well (also as a comparison to summer blockbusters in general, it is not as good as Mad Max, but probably close to Age of Ultron). One thing I did like was they actually referenced 3D in this movie (the kid was introduced looking at dinosaur pictures through a viewmaster), and as common even if they played it conservative during the dialogue scenes, it was stronger in big action moments or establishing shots of the park. |

Also, Cinemablend's 3D rating system gave it 5/5 for beyond the window (I would have gone a bit lower cause they go somewhat conservative in dialogue scenes, but they are right about wide shots of the park having very impressive depth) but 2/5 for before the window (as it doesn't take any real advantage of pop-outs). And I think they are pretty close in this case, even though I've disagreed with a couple of their ratings before. |
