I just finished watching my Kino Lorber Blu-ray of The Monster That Challenged the World, and am now enjoying the commentary track.
The pacing of this movie is quaint by today's standards, but I've always enjoyed how it allows time for establishing the characters so that we're genuinely pulling for them, especially during the final showdown at the end. Tim Holt, Audrey Dalton, and Hans Conried are all believable and even multi-layered in their roles. The main star of The Monster That Challenged the World, however, is the special effects crew. The creature effects are, quite simply, without reproach, and they still shine even today in 2015. The final creature encounter is just amazing 1950s creature fun, pure and simple, and the suspension of disbelief comes quite easily. These full-sized creatures look insanely real, and that's a great accomplishment, considering the production era. The commentary track is fun and informative so far. The Blu-ray looks incredible to my eyes, and the sound effects are almost a spot-on match. Well done, Kino Lorber! |

I'd never heard of the movie outside of this website, but bought based on discussion and watched it with and without commentary. The creature was great, the commentary was great. Stock footage looked very good and it was hard to tell when it was used. The movie was good, and it's always nice to see Grandpa Fred (16 Candles) in a supporting role.
Based on Treasure of Sierra Madre, I was hoping for a better performance from Tim Holt, but I thought he was stiff. Also, the moments of personal tragedy are too well drawn and take away from the '50s monster movie vibe. Glad I watched it, but it's not something I'd recommend as an entry-level monster movie. Just finished watching this. It should've been titled "The Monster That Challenged The Local Sheriff's Department".
Enjoyable, but not overwhelmingly so. Creature looks fantastic though. Also the picture quality looks really good to me. Gonna check out the commentary track later. |
