I was really expecting, based on the opinions of almost everyone here, to not enjoy "Catacombs," and possibly, to even hate it, but to my great surprise, I really liked it-- even more so than "Cellar Dweller," which I also enjoyed (both were blind buys for me). I don't agree with the views expressed here that "Catacombs" is barely a horror movie, hard to get through, boring, etc. There is a good bit of creepy atmosphere, the acting is wonderfully human, the characters are memorable, and most of them are surprisingly relatable to me, given that I am not exactly a Catholic monk, living an ascetic life in a monastery!

I do like the subgenre of "Catholic horror" though, and this film is now one of my favorites in this category. I also enjoy studying theology and philosophy, and "Catacombs" has some interesting discussions (between certain characters) for movie fans who are also students of those subjects. It's not close to being the horror classic that "The Exorcist" is, but I do think that "Exorcist" author, William Peter Blatty, would have appreciated this thoughtful film that does have some good, creepy, "horror movie-oriented" scenes, as well as a subtle, but real, atmosphere of foreboding, throughout the film.
[Show spoiler]The scene where the demonic-- possessed?-- representation of Christ climbs down from the crucifix and attacks the priest really freaked me out! If that isn't creepy, I don't know what is!

I'm very glad to have "Catacombs" in my horror movie collection, and in my movie collection in general. I like "Cellar Dweller" too, with its good, creepy atmosphere, and interesting characters, and the monster is also fun to watch, but for me, "Catacombs" is definitely my favorite of the two.
