Nope. I think it's pretty much up to Miramax as to whether this film will be released.

With Hardware now getting a second Blu-ray, it would be nice to get some movement on this.

The deluxe Subversive Cinema DVD release still occupies a proud place on my shelves. It's packed with so many extras that I'll probably have to hold onto it even if a Blu-ray gets released. Luckily the A/V are extremely good for SD. Norm Hill really outdid himself with that release. Criterion level quality, in a sturdy plastic case even.

...honestly, I think my past dismissal of Dust Devil was a combination of being overhyped due to how amazing Hardware is and that I had some early bad experiences trying to watch it.

Yes, the first half of the film moves at a snail's pace, but unlike some films i've seen since (yeah i'm looking at you, House of the Devil and It Comes at Night. However...you're free to go, The VVitch. You're another one i've grown to appreciate since my initial dimissal of you), there's actually some great use of tension building and unease in the form of Richard Stanley making RoboCop 3 Alex Murphy some weird interdimensional voodoo demon, all while not dwelling too much on the freaky blood drawn tribal sketches Mr. Dust Devil would make at his bloodbaths.

However, once the second half hits...oh man, the movie nearly reaches Hardware's levels of awesome, with some genuinely suspenseful use of the desolate African desert and the overall unease of Africa in the midst of savage apartheid and a good nearly 30 years after the end of British colonialism (which was expertly documentary in "Africa Addio" back in the mid 60s). Also, I really liked the not quite explained but easy to interpret denouncement.

So yeah...after nearly 10 years since I first bought my copy of the 5-Disc DVD set, I finally gave Dust Devil the attention it actually deserved and I finally get why it's quite a well regarded cult film and that Richard Stanley really is a great filmmaking talent that got royally screwed by New Line Cinemas during the troubled production of the infamous "Island of Dr. Moreau" redux he tried to make several years after Dust Devil's initially butchered release.

In lieu of RoninFlix making a deal with I imagine is the remaining remnants of Miramax to give Hardware a 4K remaster on blu-ray (really anxious to receive it in the next few days), I hope the sales are good enough to justify Dust Devil to receive that same red carpet treatment because I REALLY want to see the gorgeous cinematography fully realized in High Definition.

I really hope so, DUST DEVIL and The HITCHER (weird coincidence that both movies are about killer hitchhikers) are my final two DVDs.

I imagine Roninflix might nab this one, since they were able to release Hardware from Miramax being they never put out a DVD through Lionsgate. Problem is, now Miramax's catalog resides with Paramount and who knows if they'll licence stuff out or not.

My copy of Dust Devil just came in from Germany. Gonna fire it up tonight.

It’s a great release. Watched my copy over the weekend and I was very pleased with the picture. It’s an older master but small quibbles aside with the grain structure and fine detail, it looks great. Good shadow detail, great colors, pretty decent fine detail, good black levels. The grain and fine detail could look a bit better but overall they are more than fair, and the rest is great. They did the best they could and overall it’s a pretty satisfying transfer.

The film itself is pretty enjoyable too. I did not mind the first half even though it’s mostly just development without much action, and either way it pays off quite well in the second half. Good suspense with some great supernatural horror overtones.
