Bob,

"Tomorrowland" Sneak Preview is currently playing at Epcot but Captain EO was playing there before and should be after. I wish they would hire you and Greg to fix the alignment in Captain EO. I think you said you had someone at Disney that was interested in your 3D work.

Thanks Robert for the camera info. Interesting to hear they had the mirror set up back in the 1930's.

Anderson shoots in 3D with this style 3D rig, and lately his 3D results are getting milder and more conservative. In the end, I'm thinking it's not the camera set up, but the director and DP who determine the final effectiveness of the 3D.
I suppose mirror 3D rigs allow the two camera views to be positioned closer together, of course digital cameras can also be a lot smaller than in the past anyway, so there really should be fewer technical limitations to getting slight interocular distances than in the past.

I'm reminded of that anecdote on Bob's site about the production of Dial M for Murder: Hitchcock had giant mockups of a telephone and a wrist watch built to overcome technical limitations of filming closeups with their giant camera.

The other factor is that digital alignment can achieve the greater precision that is necessary for slight subtle use of 3-D.

It's still a bit of a mystery why the use of mild, weak 3-D has fallen into favour in recent years to the degree it has. I like to think that, unlike 3-D itself, shallow 3-D is just a passing phase.

If you have a stereo 3D TV, this clip shows close to what it would look like on it. Amazing this was from 1985 or so. The clips are reversed so you actually have to flip your 3D glasses upside down... Otherwise, high medium to strong 3D in Star Chaser 3D.

This might be the only way to see this one, as I haven't found it elsewhere yet. In 3D anaglyph. Star Chaser 3D.

I have a field-sequential 3D VHS tape of Starchaser, but it doesn't work on my HDTV.

I was surprised to learn that the Amityville Horror Blu-ray boxed set from Shout! Factory actually contained Amityville 3D on an actual 3D Blu-ray. I had no idea. Not sure how I missed that one! Amazon had the set for about $45, so I took the plunge. And I'm so glad I did, because it's not available separately, and it's great!

I wish more classic 3D movies would be released on 3D Blu-ray because this is the kind of 3D that I love. Back in the 50s and 80s, they just shot 3D movies to look basically like reality. They weren't worried about turning off audiences with strong parallax. Also, they really use the 3D to nice effect with lots of fun pop-outs. I mean, Amityville 3D is not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but the 3D is great. It's really strong, with lots of nice depth to the scenes and some nifty pop-outs along the way.

My only complaint is that there's some light flickering because the brightness of the left and right eyes aren't equal in some shots. So like, a ceiling in the left eye is normal but in the right eye, it's bathed in darkness. It's a shame that Shout! Factory couldn't have remastered it better, but considering that the picture quality in general is good and the 3D is aligned correctly, it's still better than I would've expected.

Now I just wish we could get proper 3D Blus of Friday the 13th 3D and Jaws 3D…

DREDD 3d has this same exact problem, but a lot of people don't seem to notice it. I've seen it on a few other newer 3d movies, all of which were natively shot in 3d.

Good observation, agreed. My bloody Valentine 3D has some of it, but Dredd 3D a lot more.

I notice that a lot of natively-shot 3D will have some lighting issues, where say, someone's helmet will have a highlight in one eye, but not in the other, based solely on where the cameras are angled. I would expect that, because that's how it would look in reality, too. This just seems like something that could be corrected by simply making sure both cameras are set for the same lighting/color.

I don't recall seeing it much in the 50s 3D movies I have like Kiss me Kate or House of Wax. Maybe they weren't as careful in the 80s?

Yes, not nearly as bad on My Bloody Valentine but it pops up. I found it highly distracting in Dredd.

Yes, sometimes they can post edit certain effects to diminish the differences for each camera. During filming, it's possible too, making sure they check the views for discrepancies. If detected, adjust the dual camera angles away from the light flare.

When it happens, it's impossible to miss, since one eye darkens the view for a few split seconds. Thankfully most of the movie gets it right despite the varying levels of 3D strength.

I'd like to see more 80's 3D. Star Chaser 3D on blu ray 3D would be my first wish.

Considering that Shout! Factory has already released Amityville 3D, anyone wanna bet that the next '80s 3D film to be released on Blu-ray 3D will be Treasure of the Four Crowns or Comin' At Ya!?

Comin' At Ya (1981) is a possibility since it already has a DCP ready to go.

Come to think, Shout! Factory could also possibly do a 3D Blu-ray of Starchaser.

That would be cool if they license the rights and get it on blu ray 3D.
Sad there is no current news on a possible blu ray 3D release in 2015 for Star Chaser 3D. Great animation, design and 3D in the Star Wars theme. The worldwide rights are available for licensing last time I heard, but not sure what is happening.

I Would love to see both Jaws 3D and Friday the 13th: Part 3 3D come out on Blu Ray 3D. I however never heard of Starchaser.

Three 3D films of the 1980s on the PS3 [Actually on the internet.]. Know Parasite had the best quality, Converted MetalStorm in its original while the VHD version of Spacehunter, Noted that it uses both right eye and left eye prints.
