Certainly the kind of movie that you'd expect most people to find slow and boring.

...but to those who get it, it's freaking BEAUTIFUL.

Big time influence on Apocalypse Now and Terrence Malick films imo.

Some of em are Gone With The Wind, Amadeus, Vertigo, It Happened One Night, The Gold Rush, The Apartment, Sunset, and all of Charlie Chaplin's movies.

Maybe some musicals as Im not a fan. And definitely quite a few Japanese films, not a fan.

There's a good deal of crossover with Aguirre and Malick's later work, I'll give you that.

I am bias on this but I would say give Chaplin's movies a try. I don't like using the word genius but in the case of Charlie Chaplin the word truly fit. Maybe start with Modern Times or Gold Rush and go form there, I doubt very much you would be regret seeing them even if you don't become of fan

I remember watching Sunset Boulevard and Double Indemnity a couple of years back simply because of the amount of times Ive seen them referenced here and there.

Loved them both on first watch and immediately went after the blu-rays!

Apologies to Audrey Hepburn but I've never seen My Fair Lady or Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Being honest, many old movies are dated (not necessarily meaning they're bad) but On The Waterfront is timeless, with some of the greatest ever filmed.
