It's crazier than that though, because this is one of the most critically disrespected subgenres ever: the post-apocalyptic action film. Pixar, and deservedly so, has always been a critic's darling. Movies about death cars in the desert, not so much. Critically, this movie is an aberration, a fluke. We may never see anything like this again. Even on Metacritic, a much tougher critical aggregator to earn a high rank on, it's at 91 and climbing: http://www.metacritic.com/movie/mad-max-fury-road

Miller wasn't forced to do 3D, he wanted it in 3D but logistical reasons prevented 3D cameras from being used:

Quote:
Now did you shoot native 3D, or did you post-convert?

We post-converted. We built cameras. We built six cameras that were small enough to get inside the vehicle and could withstand the heat and dust. Then I chickened out because if we lost even one… we often had 15 cameras and if we lost one camera even one day, like they couldn’t cool a camera enough and I thought, "Oh, there’s one camera down." We’ve lost up to three units, you know. We can’t get a camera in that case, so we made the decision to go digital which liberated us. Johnny Seale is someone who was very happy to put cameras everywhere, multiple cameras. We ended up having cameras everywhere, and if we lost a camera, a crashed camera, we could go to the airport even in Namibia and buy another one for $1,500 to $2,000. That was big. Meantime, it took so long for these things to happen that the conversion is much, much better.

It seems to give you more control. I talked to del Toro about "Pacific Rim," and early on in his tests, he realized that if he did 3D for any of the scenes with the monsters and the robots, they looked like toys. So he would push it very shallow and then only in interior scenes with humans would he open it up.

Also, every vehicle... all of them (before destruction) were drivable.

Practical effects have gotten incredibly scarce in big-budget summer blockbusters, so it's pretty refreshing to learn that every ride in Mad Max: Fury Road's apocalyptic menagerie isn't CGI -- they're all functional and drivable.

I would say horror is more critically panned (It Follows and The Babadook being rare exceptions).

I'm waiting for this movie since 1998.

It seems like my prayers have been listened by some superior entity: Miller.

Saw this last night in theaters and it was awesone

Regardless of wether you've seen the originals or not, this film plays well and it's just some great directing at work.

You think it'll translate well into a TV, or is it one of those theater experiences that dips in quality watching it at home?

After seeing on a rather large screen in 3D, it was an adjustment, at least for me, seeing the trailers and movie clips on my 42" TV.

This has cinematic experience spray painted all over it and I do want to own this on BD3D but I really want to see it again in a 3D theater.

Just came back from seeing it; this is cinema! I saw the 2D version (I can watch in 3D at home so will get the 3D version on blu eventually), the movie looked amazing and hit all the right notes for me. I'm tempted to go see it a second time and I haven't had that with a movie for a long time.

So the 3D was good? How's it compare to other 3D movies?

I'm looking forward to this, but I couldn't care less what film critics have to say about it

Better than most 3D I've seen, similar to Avatar and Guardians of The Galaxy. It is well done and not overly gimmicky.

There's nothing wrong with providing a choice. Enough people must watch in 3D because the studios keep releasing films in 3D.
i love 3D and if the movie is getting a blu ray 3D release i wil buy it i will never buy the 2D version of a movie that was in 3D
