This is my favorite Coens hands down. I always loved Fargo, but from the first time I saw it Fargo dropped to number two. William Robert Thorton is at his best, nary a smile to be seen. And after listening to the commentary I can't watch the first piano scene without losing it from laughing.
Fargo really is a masterpiece, but there is just something about this film that pierces me and gets right to my core. I sometimes wonder if the Coens travelled back in time to the 50s, made this film then, and brought it back with them. "Arnie Bragg? Again?" |

I always wanted to see the color version myself. I imagine it to look a little like Oh Brother Where art Thou? Very muted tones. It would be great to have both.

Now let's hope for a stateside release of Barton Fink. I have been waiting over five years for it to be released.
Definitely will be picking up this film as well. |

Beautiful noir masterpiece from the Coens.
Re. the colour version, Roger Deakins stated that it was made because of contractual obligations for the foreign DVD market, as someone in charge did not think a B/W version would sell well there. According to Deakins he muted the colours as much as he possibly could. The dvd was available in France for a while, still he and the Coens prefer it not be shown. |
