I haven't seen this yet so can't comment but going off what other people are saying this is why 3D is failing if you want to apply that term to it. So many of these films are getting the mediocre 3D treatment so people avoid spending their money on it which in turn makes them think that people aren't interested in 3D. There is a market for 3D but you have to make it GOOD 3D dammit.

Marvel and Pixar, operating as 'seperate' studios have final say on how their films make it to blu-ray. They tend to opt towards having their films released in the theatrical 3D format... strangely, and annoyingly, Disney don't give the same treatment to titles released solely under their own banner.

[Show spoiler]the characters morph into one-dimensional shapes against a white background
. Obviously, 3D will be of no use in such a scene. The "Lava" short before the movie had much better depth and overall 3D effect. Regardless, I've pre-ordered the 3D Blu-ray to show my support for the format. Here's to hoping the movie looks better on my 3D TV.

However, the movie itself is easily one of Pixar's best. If you liked Toy Story 3 or have any semblance of a heart, you'll be hard-pressed to not shed at least a few tears at the end of Inside Out. A reviewer for Variety said it best: this movie will "forever change the way people think about the way people think."
I saw a preview screening of the film a few weeks before release - they would usually screen previews in the 3D format if the film is released that way, however, this one wasn't.
I wondered why - this makes sense now...

This movie was phenomenal. Unbelievably creative in every way. The 3d I would say was average. It wasn't a flat 3d title, like say the release of Priest.

I must say with the varied opinions of the 3D - I was expecting a pretty mundane theatrical experience - but ... I was surprised. While there isn't a lot of pop out - depth is damn impressive. I have to credit Arclight Bethesda's 65 foot 'widescreen' with 4K projector and Dolby Atmos sound - the image had enough light output to achieve the intended 3D effect and the Atmos mix was highly creative and threw some of the dialogue into various interesting areas of the auditorium - notably the human voices up over you and pushed towards the back - when the setting was taking place within Riley's head but the outside world is heard just outside.

loved the movie (and of course the overall presentation).

I agree that theater equipment has a huge impact on the overall 3D effect. I seem to enjoy 3D more on my LG OLED TV than I do in my local AMC theater. As you mentioned, light output is extremely important with 3D movies, and I've always found my theater's projectors to display a relatively dark image behind 3D glasses. Again, I'm hoping the Blu-ray will change my opinion of the film's 3D.

I think it will. I've seen 3D movies on not properly calibrated (too dark) commercial theater setups and then in turn the home video presentation, and it improved substantially. It's too bad there aren't more nationwide Dolby Vision theaters that use the new brighter laser systems (as well as Dolby Atmos) to really represent how and why some theater's 3D presentation are on the less than stellar side.

I do like RealD, but my city's only multiplex (run by Carmike) is mediocre with its projection and sound system (which is probably barely 5.1).

For Inside Out, I went to the nearest theater (two hours away, not run by Carmike) with Atmos, but they weren't showing the film in Atmos due to Jurassic World playing in their only Atmos auditorium. Still, they did have the film in Dolby 7.1 and Dolby 3D. The 7.1 mix was good (and had some directional moments), and the 3D was clear and it did have depth.

Outside of riding Star Tours at the Disney Parks, this is my second experience with Dolby 3D and it works well despite being a passive system that works without the silver screen RealD has. Hope to watch the next Terminator movie in Atmos and Dolby 3D (would choose IMAX if I could, but then I would have to drive 8 hours to Minneapolis).

For what it's worth, the Disney Movie Club has Inside Out available for pre-order in two editions:
  • Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD
  • Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD + 3D
I think this pretty much confirms that the US will be getting a Blu-ray 3D release.

As is also often the case with Pixar, the 3D is used even more effectively in the latest original short that precedes “Inside Out,” another poignant story called “Lava,” presenting the unusual concept of a volcano as a character. The male volcano is portrayed lonely and spends its life singing a silly but sweet lovelorn ditty for a volcano mate (“…send me someone to lava”), which ultimately erupts just a bit too late and oriented in the wrong direction.

Wow, really excited about this coming out in 3D (I hope). Definite pre-order.

I knew something was 'Up' because all the TV commercials make a point of showing "3D" at the top.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the info on the 3D too.
I thought the final act went mild in Priest 3D, but most of it was medium 3D with nice layering.

the rule as we all know is if its a non marvel 3D release, its banned from going to the home consumer market unless it occurs through international importation on our part, or it occurs within the last 5 years 3D went to the home from the studio.

Inside out may very well be the one that makes pixar exempt from this, continues marvel's exemption (As long as the parent company doesn't control the project, like it did with Big Hero 6), among any number of outcomes.

Disney may be merciful enough to pixar this time and give it a release to home, depending on how much say pixar was given by the mouse.
That would be nice if Pixar continues to offer 3D on blu ray 3D in the US too, but as you suggest, maybe this is an exception. Now only if Disney would reconsider with their 3D animations.

FROZEN was never announced as being a Blu-ray 3D release on the Disney Movie Club site. As noted before, it appears that Disney has no problem releasing the Marvel and Pixar titles in 3D--it is just movies made by Disney itself. I have a feeling that Star Wars: the Force Awakens will be offered in 3D Blu-ray format as well even though the re-releases of the prequels never materialized on home video (and 2/3 didn't make it to the theaters either but were supposed to be shown at Disney's Star Wars Celebration on Anaheim, but from what I can tell, that never happened either). Here is the announcement from Starwars.com from back in January: http://www.starwars.com/news/revenge...inkId=11544540
I think fans are clamoring so much for the new Star Wars film that Disney will not deny them the opportunity of getting the 3D Blu-ray version. The audience for Star Wars films, like the audience for Marvel films, is very different from the audience of Frozen. Truth be told, I always thought Disney would eventually release a special 3D edition of Frozen similar to the way movies like The Lord of the Rings trilogy are rolled out in edition after edition. That still may happen. With all the Frozen-themed events at the Disney parks and the new Frozen attraction opening next year at Epcot, Disney may be saving it for later. Trouble is, many of us (myself included) have already gotten it from Amazon UK and will continue to do the same as long Disney refuses to release 3D versions here in the US.

Its good to finally hear a few positives about this one's 3D. So far I've been hearing nothing but underwhelmed responses to the depth.

Actually, Disney Movie Club had Frozen 3D available for pre-order immediately after the movie was released in theaters. I originally placed an order through them which was subsequently cancelled. You can read through the Frozen 3D threads in this forum for other examples.

Also, I believe Revenge of the Sith 3D was in fact shown at this year's Star Wars Celebration (at least, they had specific dates scheduled and were prepared to distribute promotional 3D glasses): http://www.starwarscelebration.com/e...sses-Included/

But I agree -- I believe that Disney will release Force Awakens on Blu-ray 3D, and maybe even Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith at some point. My guess is that Lucasfilm, like Marvel and Pixar, controls the formats on which their films are released. Walt Disney Home Entertainment is simply the distributor.

Considering that 20th Century Fox still has the theatrical and home video rights to the Star Wars prequels till 2020 (Lucasfilm holds the digital and broadcast rights), I doubt we'll see 3D BD releases for the prequels.

Attack of the Clones also had a 3D screening at the Star Wars Celebration. (all three actually) 'Attack and 'Revenge' had their debuts there.

Went and saw this in 2D last night since everyone in here wasn't raving about the 3D. Learned my lesson with Jurassic World last week as the 3D wasn't that great, even my 8 year old said the 3D on that one wasn't impressive. All that said I will be picking up the 3D release if given the option when it comes out
