Default Top Movies Lists

I know no it's impossible to find a list where the person viewing it is going to agree with very much of it, but just as a starting point for me to get an idea of which movies to watch, is there any particular well-regarded list other than the IMDB top 250? There's not much left on that list I want to even try. By the end of this month, technically there will probably still be 175+ of those I haven't seen, but I am not so interested in watching many foreign films, old films (pre-70s), animated films, or organized crime dramas. So that kicks out half the list right there.

You're gonna miss out on a lot of great movies by disregarding these.

Go to Barnes & Noble, they have a top 100 display on their DVD/BD shelves.

However, if you don't want to watch anything before the 70s then you don't really want to watch the best movies ever. So you should reword your post that you want to watch the best movies from the 70s and up, which will narrow your list down a lot to less than 100.

It can't narrow it to below 100, because there's going to be a top 100 for everything, whether they're great or crap. Also it's going mighty overboard to claim that in the past FIVE decades not 100 good movies have been made. lol

People on IMDB clearly don't agree, as the top 250 list has only 75 movies from pre-1970 and 175 that aren't (I just counted). And then a huge percentage of the pre-1970 ones are form the 1930s. yeah, I'm sure a huge percentage of younger-than-60 people are sitting around watching 30s movies for their entertainment.

What has been said in here is opinion. Your opinion is most of the best ones are old. I am simply stating facts, not opinions. Facts are that I would rather watch later made ones and also that they will look more realistic on blu ray which this forum is all about (that format).

Also assumptions are being made, as well, such as I am "disregarding" the top movies. What if I've already seen a lot of them? I've already seen 12 angry men, wizard of oz, psycho, gone with the wind, etc etc all those classics. I actually don't think I had seen Psycho until this past week. If I saw it when I was younger, I forgot (the original version). I watched it recently, and it's overrated, in my opinion, because of such bad acting in the actual death scenes. The story was great, but even to say older movies are technically better would be a stretch. When delivering lines, I'd say more were better actors back then, although, then again, usually they were all over the top.

I want to watch the best movies which are in color and look pretty good on blur ay. There are always EXCEPTIONS. I did not say I want a list of ONLY that type. Only that I have seen MOST of the others I care to see. My vision sucks, so why would I want to read subtitles often? I watched Life Is Beautiful recently and watching an occasional one with subtitles is bad enough. I loved Pan's Labyrinth, otherwise it's rare I truly "love" one where I have to read subtitles.

But seriously.... not 100 good movies from 1970 until 2015? That's 45 years and probably like 20,000 movies.

Also, I am open minded. thus why I am soon going to watch Goodfellas, The Departed, and Pulp Fiction despite almost literally hating Tarintino and only thinking the Godfather movies were ok and that the Usual Suspects was boring. I give everything a chance, but not all people like the some genres of movies. I bet some of you are the type who go on and on about how the dark knight is overrated because you simply don't like that genre. I don't like that genre much, either, but thatw as an amazing movie, still.

I think a lot depends on when you first saw a movie, also. I recently saw Jaws for the first time and thought it was at best a 7 out of 10. And I saw Fight Club for the first time. I did end up loving it, but to me the ending actually made me rate it lower, not higher. I rate it an 8, but would have been a 9 without that ending because to me it didn't fit the movie, with how it was made. That type of ending was more believable in other movies I have seen. Now, see, if I saw that FIRST, before the copycate type movies from later on, maybe I'd feel differently.

I said why. I don't like reading subtitles constantly. I said I will watch some occasionally, so only mention them if they are so good I jut must watch them. Someone recommended Grave of the Fireflies, then I see it's animated. That's a double drawback, foreign film and animated.

ok. I should listen to you, random internet guy, who thinks watching film is about putting technical superiority above story and entertainment. I bet if a movie comes out where the whole movie is about paint drying, you will praise it because it will be portrayed realistically.

Dude, if you're serious and not just a troll... why not just start a few different threads like Favourite 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s movies and get people to list theirs? No one can make you like pre-70s films (I'm not much of a fan myself) but if you're actually looking for newer movies you might like, it might be a good way of doing so without so being confrontational about it...

Unless, of course, you are trolling. In which case... carry on, I guess...

How is it confrontational to simply tell which types I don't want to watch in the IMDB list? I was only explaining why I want a new list, the fact that I have watched most everything I care to see form the IMDB list. People on here, just like those on the IMDB boards, can't stand anyone liking different movies than they do, so they have to throw a temper tantrum and childishly insult someone who dares not like The Godfather movies. I know TONS of people who don't like them.

Now I am debating whether to actually watch the butterfly effect 2 or just delete it and never watch it, a]s bad as it's rated.

Why watch movies pre-70 when you can watch cinematic masterpieces like The Butterfly Effect 2? I'm thinking LogMeIn is either a troll or a young teenager. That would explain all of this nonsense.
