Is there really gonna be Aladdin and Jasmine in this anyway? Sounds more like Genie Begins, maybe they bring Aladdin into it towards the end and tie things into the original. As for who to play the Genie - I think Stephen Fry would be great, but I dunno if they want someone who looks/sounds like Robin Williams. My guess is probably more respectful to just let someone go in a different direction rather than mimic Williams.

My first thought was that Hugh Jackman would make for a perfect Genie. He wouldn't be able to do the Robin Williams style comedy, but I think he has enough charm to play a Genie convincingly.

They could stick Hugh Jackman in any movie and it would be watchable. Even Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen would have been watchable with Hugh Jackman.

I can't argue with that. Hugh Jackman has very pleasing screen presence.

And people wonder why he's always the lead in the X-Men movies.

In fact, they should just stick Hugh Jackman in every film trailer and then you'd wonder why you've spent so much on cinema tickets in the past year.

Disney's Live-Action 'Aladdin' Enlists Guy Ritchie to Direct

Quote:
Guy Ritchie, the stylistic director behind the Robert Downey Jr-starring Sherlock Holmes movies, is in negotiations to helm Disney’s live-action adaptation of its 1992 animated classic, Aladdin.

Dan Lin, who was a producer on the Holmes movies for Warner Bros., is producing what the studio will be an ambitious and non-traditional take on Aladdin via his Lin Pictures banner.

The 1992 movie was part of Disney’s animation renaissance and retold the classic Middle Eastern-set folk tale of a young man granted three wishes by a genie trapped in a lamp and the evil sorcerer who covets the magical object.

The genie was voiced by Robin Williams, who won audiences over with his unrestrained performance, making Aladdin the highest-grossing film of the year. The movie also won Oscars for best score and best song, the latter for A Whole New World, one of the movie’s six songs.

The movie launched a small Aladdin franchise for the studio and it was in recent years translated to the stage.

John August wrote the script for the live-action version which sources say will keep many of the musical elements of the original. Still to be determined is the approach to the Genie, which to this day remains closely associated to Williams' singular and defining performance. Also, part of the non-traditional aspect of the project is the studio's intent to make it non-linear, a move right out of the Ritchie playbook.

I'm intrigued. I won't lie. It is an odd choice, but I feel like this could be pretty darn cool.

As long as Jafar gets to use Brick Top's speech from Snatch then I'm in.

Actually the more I think about it, just go ahead and give Alan Ford the part.

I dig it. I really like Guy Richie and I seem to be one of the few that really dug the King Arthur trailer.
I do think with how iconic Robin Williams is as Genie, that unlike other live action adaptions, they need to take a different route instead of trying to be too similar to the original, and I think that is something Richie will bring.

^^ This

That's why I'm thinking RDJ could really turn out a great performance as a dry-wit Genie with a little bit of edge, if that's the tone they go for. I could see him being a more charismatic take on Jafar, too. I would be good with him in either role, actually.

It's a damn shame Robin isn't around to participate. It would have been nice.

Does this mean we aren't getting Sherlock Holmes 3?

Ritchie is fantastic. He'll do right by it.

So is it no longer a prequel? They're actually remaking Aladdin? Nothing against the remakes and all that, but Aladdin is too special to me; no interest in seeing it redone. Pass.
