Very surprised to see my own favorite, Vertigo, winning this poll.
Definitely Hitchcock's best, and in every way. |

I've gone back and forth on Vertigo. A couple years back the movie frustrated me due to its major tonal shift, and character shift in the second half. But now, I've come to accept that more.
I never had any such qualms with Rear Window, though I think the way he gets rid of the villain is hilarious and dumb, and if someone did that today, they'd be ridiculed to no end. Still, it's a masterwork of suspense, and just a great all around movie. I think Shadow of a Doubt is also a masterpiece, and arguably a perfect film. I could go on like this about a lot of his films, but this is all to say that it's impossible for me to say which is his best, as there are too many candidates that are equally worthy. As for my favorite film, which I end up watching more than most, that would have to be The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). |

I love so many of these, and for different reasons, it was hard to choose.
Norman Bates so perfectly cast. Jimmy Stewart's morally corrupt character in Vertigo Princess Grace's appearance in Rear Window, a movie marred by the flashbulb defense. Strangers on a Train with the sensational photography. I love the shot in The Birds where the lovebirds lean back and forth while the tires squeal. Little bits and pieces in each movie thrill me to no end but ultimately I picked Vertigo, with Psycho a close second, Rebecca third. |
