Ghibli themselves play a big part in the creation of all Ghibli-related dubs being done now, so the films handled by GKIDS probably wouldn't be any different under Disney.

Hilarious; especially since Disney allowed the PG-13 (for violence no less) Princess Mononoke to be a Disney release after they took it from Miramax when they sold the company. I guess menstruation is worse than decapitations

I don't think there's any particular one reason in the film they didn't release it. You could speculate it was the menstruation stuff, or the dad slapping her across the face, or the boys looking up the girls' skirts, or any number of so-called 'suspiciously hot button' scenes in the movie. I think in the end Disney just didn't think it would sell enough copies on home video. It's animated, it's slow paced, has almost zero fantasy (outside of dream sequences) and it's about a 28-29 year old woman looking back at her childhood. In Ameri-speak, that's sales poison. There's no actual American demographic for a film like this, other than *some* anime fans and film geeks, which are way too small a group collectively to make a dent for Disney's sales expectations. Only Yesterday might have, at best, moved maybe 4000 copies in North America. Probably realistically more in the 2000 range. That's just not enough for Disney's liking. All the other Ghibli films would be sure to move at least 5000 copies, probably even in the 10,000+ range for the bigger titles like Totoro. But for GKids, that's fine. They are shooting for a smaller demographic. |

Surprised that the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago is not playing this, given they have yearly Ghibli festivals and premiered The Tale of Princess Kaguya.
I might just wait for the blu-ray in this case, as it looks like no theaters near me are playing it in the next three months. |

but if they also wanted to do an Arrietty release with the UK and US dubs then that'd be cool too ![]() |
