As for the movie itself, I had high hopes, but it just didn't do anything for me. As a disaster flick, it's a dud. It takes nearly half the running time for the sh-t to hit the fan and then the rescue part is honestly not that exciting. It mostly involves just getting off of a burning rig and onto lifeboats. As a drama, the characters are likeable, but not fleshed out enough to the point where I was all that invested. In a lot of ways, this reminded me of Sully. The body count is higher here. No people died on the Hudson. 11 died in that explosion. But you have a pretty quick resolution to a crisis. You've got Laura Linney and Kate Hudson in thankless roles as concerned wives who are stuck back home. And both movies are technically well made but ultimately not that interesting. Hopefully Patriots Day, the next Wahlberg-Berg(hey, similar names) collaboration is better. As for Deepwater Horizon, if you want a disaster movie set out at sea that stars Kurt Russell, you're better off watching Poseidon. |

Poor Lionsgate. Their top grossing movie domestically this year is Allegiant ($66M). This will only make half its budget back domestically.

Saw it a few hours back and ended up loving it. It falls a little bit flat in a few little moments, but the intensity and the buildup are really excellent. Wahlberg was great, though I was glad to see a lot of the supporting cast got their time to shine.
I can see some of its faults, but easily 4.5/5 from me. Saw it in IMAX and will definitely try to go for another round before it leaves those screens ![]() |

Just got home from a late showing of this movie.
Let me start by saying it's been a while since I've been to the movies, but this movie hit some decent factors for me to finally come back to the cinema after an almost two month hiatus. For one, the original trailer, which I saw way back earlier in March behind Batman v Superman made me at least intrigued at this film. Second, my friends were interested in seeing it, and last, the reviews were decent. So, that was enough for me to drive down and pop some money for a ticket. My review for this is going to be extremely short, because there just wasn't too much to talk about. The best way to talk about both the pros and cons about this is mentioning my largest con, which is that the film simply wasn't memorable. Yes, the acting was good, the movie looked good, and the movie's plot was good, but nothing was great or out of the ordinary. Mark Wahlberg delivers a solid performance but nothing I can see getting an Oscar or any rewards buzz. He did the movie justice, but never went above and beyond. Kurt Russell is also in this but feels fairly underused. Another point is the visuals. I did have another thing going through my head in this which was the fact the movie's budget was $156m. And it does go to fairly good use. But the thing is, the movie starts feeling like a Michael Bay firework show after the second act kicks in. It feels explosion after explosion without much actual tension or suspense. So that basically covers most of it already in that short little paragraph. My other con was the tone of the film. The first 30 minutes and change are rather comedic. Which isn't a bad thing at all, it definitely made the movie amusing and had the audience laughing. But what did hurt it was that after these first 30 minutes it dives straight into the action and suspense of the film. Now one could argue this was simply the way the movie was mean't to be, given there wasn't much time for slow and steady tone switch in the actual tragedy, but my point still stands. Other than those two points, I can't say too much about [I]Deepwater Horizon[i/]. I'll leave you with this. Should you see Deepwater Horizon? Sure. Do you need to see it right away? Not in the slightest. I'd say unless your friends or family are going, you can probably wait until you can rent it to see it. My Rating: 6/10 |

Saw it today. Liked it enough to say that while it was not a memorable film, it was a decent 2 hours at the theater. Film moves along with the standard set up showing us how the off shore drill facility works before it kicks into disaster film mode. Visuals are done well enough and the cast is serviceable.
