The Final Girls - Upon hearing the plot I was pumped, then found out it was rated PG-13, which damped my spirits a bit. Still i watched it and was very very surprised by it. It not only pays homage to the 80s slashers it also at the core of it is a touching mother daughter story. And the "bette davis" scene is one of the most iconic movie moments of the year for me.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse - It sucks that paramount tried out its new, wide release then vod soon after approach to this. This should have been promoted more because it was a very funny and action packed unconventional zombie movie.

Trainwreck - Having not been a huge fan of Judd and his previous films, and also having a practically unknown lead, I was sure about how good this would be. Boy was I mistaken. It was hilarious, and touching. And Amy is now getting the recognition she deserves.

We Are Your Friends - I can see where all the criticism comes from for this film but honestly I loved the music and the energy Zac gave to the performance.

Ricki and the Flash - Went in expecting an average family dramedy, I got that and more with the stellar cast. And Meryl performing rock songs, doesn't get any better.

Mad Max: Fury Road - Hold Crap! The trailers just made it look like an action epic, but not to the extent that the film was. Everything about it was just fantastic and it deserves all the hype and hopefully awards that come to it.

The following went above what I was expecting:

Mission Impossible Rogue Nation (motorcycle scene)
Martian 3D (final act)
Peanuts 3D (smile on my face most of the movie)
Spectre 007 (lots more action and great action too)
Good Dinosaur 3D (3D way better than Pixar's prior mild 3D efforts)
Star Wars VII 3D (went beyond my expectations, awesome)

Everything I've seen so far (although there's plenty left I haven't watched yet) has turned out about how I've expected.

It Follows - I don't normally like horror much at all. This film is special.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Probably the best mass market non-Pixar film in at least a decade. I never thought it'd be bad because it's way too important for Disney but I didn't expect it to be as wonderful as it is. Reverent in all the right places and ultimately is able to stand on its own feet as something new. Contains one of the best newcomer casting decisions of my lifetime.

Brooklyn - Never thought this would be my favorite film of the year. Normal people do normal things and it's not a film that relies on twists and turns and yet I found myself on the edge of my seat at one point. Relentlessly pleasant and sublime without ever being mawkish. A love letter to the immigrant foundation of this country that we so often forget.

The Age Of Adaline: This movie almost made me cry a couple of times. Sniff....sniff.

The Wedding Ringer: Although I am "attracted" to R-rated comedies, I wasn't expecting this to be funny. Kevin Hart and Josh Gad surprised me in this one.

Diary of a Teenage Girl
Went in with 0 expectations, knew almost nothing about it. Found it to be one of the strongest films I've seen a while. It stuck with me for a very long time afterwards.

Mad Max: Fury Road
OK, this one's sort of weird, since I really didn't like it too much. But, that being said, I liked it more than I thought I would. So technically it exceeded my expectations.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
This one I bought blind solely because of the cast and, especially, the look of the trailers and clips. It just looked so damned fashionable. But what a fun ride it turned out to be! I am so glad that I gave this one a chance.

Ant-Man. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would as I'm not one for superhero movies. It's my second favourite MCU movie after Guardians.

Paper Towns and We Are Your Friends both far exceeded my expectations. Also Terminator Genisys.

Mad Max: Fury Road - Don't normally like straight action movies but this is one of the better ones I've ever seen.

Ex Machina- After some lackluster critical reviews I was expecting to be disappointed but it was surprisingly good.

Spotlight- expected it to be good, but was surprised that I would put it as the second best film I watched.

Sicario- Never expected this to be as good as it was based on the trailers.

It Follows- I dislike the genre normally but was pleasantly surprised with this title.
