I wasn't originally planning to see this as I was not wowed by the trailers. Yet from the 3D reviews thus far I may go ahead and see it if only for the 3D. I want to be wowed by the 3D in the theater. The last few movies just have not done it for me.

I've got ticket for Saturday morning (1st show) and it's on the largest screen with Atmos but not in 3D. I'd have to fork over too much money for 2 adults and two kiddies tickets cause the 3D version isn't showing early. Usually they would have a new release on the big screen with Atmos and 3D (if applicable) but not this time. I'll check the 3D down the road on BD.

"Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, if that means anything to anyone.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised, hearing about the favorable reviews and the good use of 3D. Looking forward to the Blu now.

This does indeed have more pop-outs than any modern 3-D film I've seen in recent memory. They're all over the place, especially any scenes involving beams being fired There's also some nice exaggerated 3-D on city fly-over shots. I didn't think the other scenes were a particularly impressive conversion. Scenes with just the actors were little more than several layers of cut outs, without much in the way of added volume. Maybe that stuff isn't as important to people. If pop-outs are what matter to you, this film delivers. It seemed they broke the aspect ratio more times than any film I've seen do that, sometimes to great effect.
Agreed. The pop-outs were great fun AND totally appropriate for this kind of film. Exactly what audiences want when they pay extra for 3D. The ghost vomiting slime at the camera made me duck, and there were all kinds of things flying out of the screen during the action scenes. Very glad I took a chance on this on the big screen.

I thought the film itself worked quite well. It made made me laugh more than I expected, and visually it was vibrant. Kate McKinnon was fantastic, a total scene-stealer. The others more or less stuck to their usual schtick.

I'm curious to see how well it does. The original made gajillions at the box office, but it came from out of nowhere. This wasn't exactly a reboot fans were clamouring for (to put it mildly). It's better than the hype suggests, though. A lot better.

The vomiting slime scene is an example of something I thought looked kinda dumb and lowbrow in the trailer, but in the movie that 3-D was so exceptional that it was easily forgivable and totally justifiable. That was one of the standouts. I'd list some of the other choice moments, but it kinda spoils it, because part of what makes it work in a scene like that is that they take you by surprise. There were audible gasps in the theater at certain popout scenes.

I was a bit disappointed with all the flat faces in some of the regular dialogue scenes, but I suppose that's just how most conversions are. But yeah, in the scenes where it counted, they didn't hold back. It was paranormal. The 3-D definitely gives it that extra kick.

The film itself is tremendously entertaining. I don't think the comedy has the edge of the original, but there's a lot of laughs and the team had great chemistry. As much as has been made about the gender-swapping of the film, that aspect didn't seem forced. The character Patty was my favourite, which I wasn't expecting at all. She kept it grounded. Like Winston in the original, she's basically just some randomer off the street, and I like Winston a lot, but it felt like they really needed what she brought to the table, and not just the Cadillac.

I've watched the original numerous times over the years, and feel like the new film will also benefit from repeat viewings and should find its audience. Even though I wasn't 100% on board with all the choices they made, it was fun like a themepark ride, where you wanna go again.

One name I noticed in the credits was a visual effects credit for Eric Brevig. This doesn't seem to be listed online yet, so I'm wondering if I read that correctly. Some will know that name as the director of 3-D movies such as Journey to the Center of the Earth, and for visual effects in numerous films going back to 80s 3-D such as Captain EO.

I'm wondering if his involvement may have contributed in some way to the generous amount of out-of-screen imagery.
Great details, thanks Interdimensional.

I wouldn't mind, since most of the films released in 3D these days are special effects films anyway. It would show they were actually thinking about the 3D more often. TMNT 1 & 2 3D have some strong 3D pop outs, part 2 especially. Sounds like Ghostbusters 3D may exceed it for pop outs.
Hansel & Gretel 3D blu ray 3D also has great pop outs, though they're the fast kind, but make you flinch. Wild Life 3D, and from what I heard, Secret Life of Pets have strong 3D pop outs too in 2016.

Not in 3D, that's a bummer. I'll pay extra to see the 3D compared to sitting in a 2D theater thinking of what I'm missing, but with a family of 4, I can understand your situation if the prices are high per ticket.

Yeah, I agree, it's nice to see the movie didn't get totally torn apart by most of the critics.

Thanks a lot MercurySeven. Helpful 3D review.
Was there a scene where Slimer, the green ghost, flew out of the screen like in the original Ghostbusters?

If the 3D in Ghostbusters 2016 does well in theaters, maybe they'll consider converting Ghostbusters 1 into 3D.

They really should've done that already, to be quite honest! The 30th anniversary 2 years ago was perfect for a 3D conversion...if Jurassic Park's popularity was enough to merit a 3D release, surely Ghostbusters 1984 has enough popularity to merit it as well? Titanic and even Predator were able to get converted...so how come Ghostbusters 1984, The Iron Giant, Terminator, Back to the Future, and Gremlins couldn't? They all deserve it and would benefit from it for sure.

Very glad to hear this got certified fresh! Normally I don't give a single shit what Rotten Tomatoes has to say, but given that this film was drowning in negativity until recently, I'm just glad to see some positivity surrounding it. Confirmed with my friends I'll be seeing it tomorrow night at 7 PM in 3D...already bought a Ghostbusters shirt, I'm primed and ready to go.

Oh man, Gremlins 3D would be awesome. But yeah, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Terminator (2 on the way which is great), Iron Giant, that would be interesting, good movie.

Yeah, that's true that the positive critic reviews kind of deflate some of the hate the movie was getting before some people even saw it. Enjoy the film and the 3D Blastcage! A Ghostbusters shirt, cool.

Now I really wish they'd replicated that final shot from the original--in 3D. Audiences would have gone berserk (I know I would!)

As for the other pop-outs...

I'd tell you, but I'd wind up getting zapped into the Ecto-Containment Unit for supernatural spoilerage.

Iron Giant was even in talks to be converted for the Signature Edition that came out last year, rather pissed they didn't follow through with it. Kinda wish Transformers: The Movie had gotten a 3D conversion for its 30th this year, but maybe it's best it didn't since some of its scenes are an epileptic seizure waiting to happen. Two other films I'd love to see in 3D are Alien and Poltergeist 1984...no real reason for those to not be converted. I can definitely think of some scenes from Poltergeist 1984 that would be badass in 3D.

Kinda figured a Ghostbusters shirt was needed, I had meant to buy one ages ago, lol. I'm half tempted to get a bumper sticker since my new car is white, but I've already got one bumper sticker(Stars and Stripes), and I do have reservations about putting even 2 bumper stickers on a Mustang...anyways, I'll probably give my review of the film on Saturday since I'll be occupied Friday, but that gives me time to better organize my thoughts and whatnot.

Haven't seen the film yet but I've watched some reviews about it and they say the 3D is very good. There are pop outs and moments where they break the frame (Like in TMNT).

Sounds promising though.

Yeah, that would've been great to see Slimer fly out down the hallway right into the screen. Kind of surprised they didn't bring back that very memorable shot in some form for this one. Looking forward to this over the weekend, thanks.

I had a Ghostbusters shirt years ago with the ghost logo on there. It was a favorite shirt to wear around the house but I remember the logo started to crack and peel off eventually.
Glad you got a replacement car after that situation earlier. Yeah, I would wait till seeing the movie to get your thoughts on it as bumper stickers can be tough to remove.

TMNT 2 3D yes and if Ghostbusters' 3D beats that movie for 3D this year, I'll be impressed.

This film had the most frame breaking I think I've ever seen. The 3D is fantastic and to be honest, the movie was pretty entertaining.

Saw it last night and I enjoyed it. I will say the 3D was probably a factor into the enjoyment. It was one of the best 3D movies I have ever seen at the theatre or at home. Although the background I thought I was seeing some overlapping images in the far distance objects but nothing too distracting to take away from the fun factor. Some jokes and gags didn't work for me movie wise but thankfully some did. I can only imagine how awesome this would be on a true 3D IMAX screen, and I will be buying this when it hits bluray.

Plus stay until after the credits for bonus sequel setup scene

in my opinion 3D and immersive audio makes up for many 'other' faults in a movie - the opportunity for me to see this in IMAX-Laser 3D / 12 channel sound next Monday night has me pretty stoked.

It's not an artifact from the source, but the day projected light can be controlled, having no illumination present on the screen for black or semi-dark images, the same way direct-view OLED works, there will always be a potential for ghosting artifacts.

Not in 3D, that's a bummer. I'll pay extra to see the 3D compared to sitting in a 2D theater thinking of what I'm missing, but with a family of 4, I can understand your situation if the prices are high per ticket.

Yep, three kids and two adults= $70.00 just for the tickets to the 1:10 PM showing in 3D vs. $25.00 for 10:20 showing in 2D on the biggest screen in Atmos for $25.00. Believe me I wanted to see it in 3D but another factor is getting out around noon and having time to do other summer things.
