None. 1080 is enough for me. Not the least bit interested in upgrading once, again.

But in all fairness, I do not plan to ever have anything larger than a 60".

Given that I am 78 and only last year added a 60" and blu-ray to my home, I do not expect to go further. I will be adding info on 4K HDR at my website, but that will be for others.

Far and Away and the Back to the Future set are the two that I want to repurchase. They need the most help and weren't treated right in HD.

I think blu-ray is the last upgrade for me. I'm 32. I had a decent collection of VHS tapes. I upgraded all of those and then added a lot more movies to my collection. Then blu-ray came out, and I upgraded most of my DVDs and added a lot more movies to my collection. Blu-ray looks great. I can't see myself going through this upgrade process again, especially with the size of my collection now. I've invested too much into what I already have to just start all over again.

LOTR and Star Wars for sure. Narnia and the Sound of Music maybe. The original Pirates of the Carribean probably!

Star Wars, original unaltered theatrical trilogy.

That's about it.

None.

Probably won't even get a 4K TV for a good 5 years or so when they're the only things available on the market. By that point I'll be very surprised if UHD is still going tbh.

My only fear is we have just now got to a point where more and more titles are being released on Bluray and we will have to go through the usual 2-3 year run up of the same titles being released on UHD while catalog titles see no releases. For the average consumer DVD's Blurays and UHD will just confuse people. I can also see with the high prices the initial UHD adoption will be very very slow and we will see the usual stories about Physical media is dead etc.

That being said I find the newer High Dynamic Range (HDR), Wider Color Gamut to be the biggest advancement here. In some cases older films, especially ones with special effects, will IMO suffer from the super high resolution. If its about seeing these older films as they were when originally released we've already surpassed that.

Since the UHD players play Bluray I will probably pick up a player when it releases, but will be very subjective about what titles I get. Many of the movies I have now I've bought on VHS, DVD and now Bluray and in most cases they look fine enough. Only my top favorite films would I consider buying on UHD.

That being said I don't expect many UHD releases for years. They will release the same films that always show up first like Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Blade Runner etc and new titles, but I expect adoption rates will make early Bluray adoption rates look magical.

Until they bring out 4K Plasmas, none.

What's the point in having more resolution when the displays have motion blur and piss poor black levels.

Probably only the animated features that Disney has ruined via death by DNR, like "Sword in the Stone." Can't wait to see all those blurred ink lines and smeared colors in glorious 4K UHD!

I'll add to the building consensus. I also will not be purchasing into the UHD system for many reasons.

1.) draconian DRM scheme. Not happening.
2.) Too soon. this tech needed to marinate a little longer as it just feels like a cash grab.
3.) HDR and wide color gamut. Now these are actually things I really want. but we already know that the agenda for rec 2020 is in the works which means all this content we are getting now and the TV's and all this nonsense is already EOL. Until they can get the system together for a real attempt at a system (something with longer legs then 3 years) then this is a non starter for me.
4.) 8K already being demoed again I know it is still a couple of years off but its still there.
5.) content is king. For the last decade or so the industry has operated under the assumption of 2k/1080P being the future so very few were forward thinking enough to finish or prepare assets in a format that 4k can take advantage of. Maybe they will learn and think to begin filming in 16K with HDR and WCG so that in the future there will be a viable reason to upgrade.

My 2 Cents
T

It's kind of hard to characterize something none of us have seen but I'm pretty sure I won't be describing any UHD copy protection schemes as 'fascist' because that's just ridiculous. It's not unreasonable (let alone dictatorial) for the owners of intellectual property to limit its use.

I can't retransmit or rebroadcast accounts of major league baseball games without the express, written consent of the commissioner. Whattayagonnado?

I want everything I want exactly the way I want it too. But that's not always going to be in the cards.

That's a great movie. I really loved the part where Walter goes off on that rant about the Supreme Court and prior restraint after the woman in the coffee shop asked him to lower his voice.

I mean, how funny was that. Raving about the First Amendment because somebody asked him to lower his voice.

Good stuff.
