The format's technically called 4K Ultra High Definition Blu-ray

Quite a mouthful, I know.

Out of curiosity, what drew you to this thread if you think it's all dreck?

Blu-ray includes 3D Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray. It's all just different versions of Blu-ray. There's a whole section of this forum devoted to UHD BD. So, no, people do care, even if you don't. Not to say that I'm 100% on board with UHD BD, but I'm interested in keeping up with info about it.

I think DP was done in 2K, Upconversions don't interest me as there is next-to-no difference (except if you stick your face 3 feet from the screen).

Wait…big budget movies are still made in 2K? Really doubt that. It's playing in IMAX too.

Yep, most movies that play in IMAX are 2K. Most movies period are presented in 2K theatrically. The Hobbit trilogy is 2K, Avatar is 2K, and Star Wars is supposedly 2K. Crazy, but it's true. 4K is not common. The 4K Blu-ray format is just coming out because the TV manufacturers are putting out 4K TVs, not because there's a plethora of new content.

I'm not so sure about that. The first consumer reviews of the Fox 4K discs, even when taken with the requisite huge grain of salt, generally do indicate that UHD Blu-ray is superior to standard Blu-ray. Remember, UHD BD also offers deeper color and high dynamic range in addition to additional resolution, and all of the films currently available were less than 4K theatrically, too. And then, there's the 99.9% certainty that Fox will release a UHD/BD combo of Deadpool day-and-date with the standard BD release anyway (it's already available for pre-order in Canada on Amazon.ca).

As for me, I loved the film, and I will definitely be future-proofing my collection, and picking up the UHD combo on release day.

I'd say late Spring or early Summer. I don't expect it to continue to make huge numbers at the Box Office. But then again, no one was really expecting that huge opening weekend. I'd say by the time Batman v Superman hits next month, Deadpool will be about done at the BO. So I think a June release would be the latest.

Even "Spring" could still mean May.

4K is quickly becoming the current digital industry filming/archiving/restoration standard and studios are trying to get the jump on future-proofing for the time when 4k theatrical showing and home video becomes the norm.

If they wanted to get a jump on it, more studios would have been mastering in 4K long ago. It's very sporadic.

What I don't understand is why This is the End is mastered in 4K, but The Interview wasn't. The newer film from the same directors was mastered in a lower resolution. No consistency.

And movies you would assume to be 4K are 2K. For an industry standard that the studios are using to future-proof film output, they're making some random choices. The biggest movies of 2015 are mostly 2K. But they expect consumers to go crazy for it, whether it's native 4K, or just 2K upscaled to 4K with some HDR enhancement.

I guess technology is done taking big steps for the moment. Now it's down to improving a couple areas only. The next big thing should be glasses-free 3D UHD OLED with built-in Atmos/DTS X. Or something better than that. Something a little more impressive... TVs the size of walls with no diminishing quality. The absence of burn-in. Super high-speed internet all over the country/world. Digital copies that are superior to Blu-ray, or disc-based content that has zero loss from the original masters. We'll probably see some of this eventually, but for now, this half-hearted attempt at 4K is a tiny step, not a leap by any means.

Back on topic, I'm seeing Deadpool in about 90 minutes. Hope it's as awesome as everyone says it is!

It was pretty awesome.

Definitely better than the trailers, but I realize it would be difficult to capture the essence of this movie/character and distill it down to a sizzle reel without losing something in the process.

I'll put it this way, if you like Zombieland (same writers), Kick-Ass (extremely violent superhero story with humor) and/or South Park (irreverent humor)
[Show spoiler](with a blatant dash of Ferris Bueler's Day Off)
, you'll probably dig this. I love all three. You do the math.

thanks, I don't see why there would be one. Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds clearly made the movie they wanted to make and it was awesome. The thing with

I'm completely fine with Deadpool making appearances in other Marvel characters' animated stuff.
