Finally the most awaited Sicario review is up.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Sicar...147731/#Review

Why awaited if anyone asking, its DI was in 4K and so 4K UHD ought to deliver something better than others. But unfortunately once again, the differences do not pop up here too.

Ofcourse I am aware its still evolving but I have this feeling that UHD format is not suited for movies which have mix of soft and sharp portions, and deliberately color toned/ color filters for mood development as well as today's trend of deliberate grainy look to create that pseudo documentary feel even for the most mainstream of movies. What i mean to say is if something is consistently sharp for the entire frame and is not color tweaked, say for a football match or say a travel documentary which are only aimed at showcasing sharpest details possible in all shots, UHD might score significantly better there.

Sicario was not released theatrically with Dolby vision or any other HDR color grading standard. Moreover, Roger Deakins was in total opposition to making any kind of deviation from the original look of the film while doing the HDR grading for UHD-BD, so Lionsgate had to make compromises. However, many users have testified that the UHD version does have an uptick in detail and overall resolution when compared to the regular BD. And then there's the fact that only the DI was 4k and the original raw footage was 3.4k.

Another more glaring issue raised by the UHD users: As of now, no specific standard has been defined for Ultra HD screens (apart from UltraHD Premium, which is essentially HDR) with respect to calibration and color/contrast optimization. Because of this, different users are seeing the same UHD image differently.

Damn!

thats exactly what I'm talking about. I seriously believe digital photography is ruining quality of motion pictures big time.

Not every motion picture need to be shot with those Indy RED cameras!

If 3.8K RAW footage is upscaled to 4K, we are in big big trouble.

What will happen when TVs go for 8K resolution in 2020.

I personally loved SICARIO in cinemas. It is brilliantly shot for a Digitally shot motion picture.

Its really a shame that proper 'native' 4K image cannot be extracted due to lower overall resolution of 3.8K RAW footage for UHD 4K brd.

As far as I'm concern, all those digital ARRI and RAW cameras can go to hell.

Much better than those "4k masters" which are basically upscaled 2k content though. However, the upcoming Revenant is a mix of 6k, 3.4k and film finished on a 4k DI. If Fox manages to get this one release right, they will undoubtedly have a "system-seller" title in hand.

Embarrassingly, member "Rajkapoor" had reminded me of something that I had overtly missed. There are 'regular' blu-rays that also come along with the UHD blu-ray releases, as part of the Combo-pack. So, I am actually going to compare and contrast frames from the same movie on UHD and 'regular' blu-rays, to assess difference in PQ. I'll update the forum with my impressions after that..

Thanks for the input guys. I upgraded my Projector from a Benq to Epson 5030UB last year and I really did not know if spending more than twice the amount was necessary for 4K content. Looks like I made the right decision by not wasting money so soon.

In 3 to 4 years from now I will upgrade again, and hopefully we can get good 4K projectors for under $3000. Maybe we can even get an affordable laser 4k projector by then.

If anyone has seen a movie in IMAX with their new laser projectors, you know what kind of difference I am talking about.

Well, you're right. My opinions here are only based on theories, stats and the reviews/experiences of first-hand 4k users (incl yours ). I'm just going to wait out till a normalized standard for 4k displays and players gets implemented (not to mention, normalization of prices too ).

EDIT: Anyway, I'll most probably be purchasing the UHD-BD combo pack of Revenant (and possibly Deadpool too) once inclusion of Atmos track is confirmed (of course, only for the UHD... this is Fox we're talking about ), as we do have the regular BD too bundled therein.

Red is upto 8K these days. 3.x is Alexa material. And 35mm film will not give you very sharp 4K either. That requires 65mm or digital 6K/8K.

yep!...one of these days!.....Heard that one before.

Meanwhile. Super35 + Anamorphic lens = twice the squeeze = 10K atleast.

meanwhile digital is still experimenting with resolution, 35mm is still future proof for 8K TVs of year 2020 and beyond.

If push comes to shove, there is always 70mm.

Nope. 35mm ends at 4K. Above that it's grain detail that adds nothing to real world detail.

Is there even enough of a 4K demand in India for them to release UHDs?

I would love for Highway to get released, if they get around to ever doing it. Might be the most gorgeous Bollywood film of the last several years, even more so than SLB's work.

BTW, for those complaining about how laborious the UHD setup process is, wait til manufacturers other than Samsung start putting out their own players. Samsung products are mostly crap.

Was there even enough of DOLBY ATMOS demand in India for them to release DOLBY ATMOS BRDs?

I think you got the answer.

But I agree. Wait til 2nd gen UHD HDR 4K bluray players release. All the glitches and hick ups are solved permanently.

This should be obvious at this point, but some people just HAVE to be the first

I saw it in Dolby Cinema equipped theatre in Dolby Vision.

It was a great experience in Dolby Atmos.

I just dont understand why this UHD 4K release deliberately skipped Dolby Atmos in favor of DTS HD MA.

I bet the 2nd 4K release will be there around the christmas time with Atmos.

Anyways this movie was shot under natural light. It will look incredible in HDR10 expanded color range here.

I guess it's got something to do with the longer runtime (156 mins) of the film itself, the limited size (66GB for dual layer, triple layer UHD BD may take forever to be out in the markets) and the fact that Fox tries to cram in way too many European language tracks in their European/Rest-of-world BD/UHD releases (which happen to be identical to their US ones, except for the inclusion of the EU language tracks). For a film this long, the atmos track may eat up space reserved for the DE/IT/FR DTS 5.1 tracks.

From what I've heard, Deadpool UHD will be released with Atmos, and since it's just 108 mins long, the inclusion of other languages for the worldwide releases won't be an issue.

So they can get us to buy it again, once more consumers adopt Atmos setups.
