Even having the original colorist can be overrated. Unless it's someone specifically assigned by the filmmakers like Lou Levinson (Spielberg, Lucas, etc) it can be a tossup. A lot of the time the transfers are just signed off on by a rep - not even the cinematographer or director. And they'll just watch a random scene or two here and there, not the film start to finish. Levinson remarked that some colorists had no idea what the movie looked like projected, they were just trying to make it look good on their monitors. It's changed a lot since the mid-2000s where everything went to DI with the filmmakers involved, but for older films? Best guess.

You do tend to see the same names pop up over and over in the digital grading arena though. There's very much a core cadre of those folks who really are the best at what they do and whom the filmmakers trust to take care of their vision time after time, so if it were left up to them then I'd be happy with that.

But I am more relaxed about the whole process now as I've had a small taste of the beauty that these HDR grades can bring to the table, and as you say, with ANY new grading carried out after the fact - HDR or not - it's likely that only a small amount of them were explicitly signed off by the filmmakers themselves, as not everyone has dat clout. Again, it comes down to the taste of the individual colourist and whether they're sensitive to the original goals and ideals of the photography.

Same with Deadpool and The Revenant. I think Amazon UK and HMV are just late in putting new titles up.

Any first impressions? How's the quality compared to the other Fox discs and the Blu-ray?

Can you tell me if it's region protected? I can see that Spanish is included in the languages, don't know if it's Latin or Castilian, but I would buy this copy from the USA if it's not protected.

Thanks!

Review from Robert Harris. He says the hdr grading was excellent for this movie.

The movie looked great, a lot better than The Fifth Wave, blind bought the movie, it was good considering it was about a mop.

I got the movie last weekend (from France, but the UHD disc is the same in every country anyway).

Compared to the Blu-ray there is not really a difference in terms of sharpness. The 2K DI listed on IMDb could be the reason. I've seen much better 35mm in 4K. There is also some digital tempering going on but I guess this was done in post production and not for the disc. The compression of the UHD disc is better especially in the grainy scenes. The colors seem a little dull on the Blu-ray - not on the UHD Blu-ray.
So, yes, the UHD version is better. But it's not a big difference.

About the movie:
I really liked Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle was average and Serena (not David Russel, but another Lawrence/Cooper movie) was bad. So I was sceptical about Joy...
...and the movie is great! I just wanted to check out the picture quality and ended up watching the entire movie.

Just bought a copy for $14.99 ($24.99 + 40% off one used item at FYE); it's a blind buy, looking forward to it. My fifth UHD

Indeed. The grain is processed at times and "swimming". Pretty ugly.

Loved this movie in the theater. Actually went and saw it twice. I know I'm in the minority. But it just hit me emotionally in a way most modern movies don't. And I love the cinematography by Linus Sandgren.

very happy to have the 4K, which is just insane how much it's going for.
