Blu-ray PQ is slightly better as well on the 1200. Not much but noticable.
I disagree with part of that. I found the BD picture on the DB30 better than the 1200. But then again, I couldn't use the 24fps option on the 1200 due to the audio being out of sync and the BD30 doesn't have this problem so I am using this setting now. That could have something to due with it.

I agree though that the 1200 was an outstanding upconverter for regular DVDs and the BD30 can't match it. This didn't matter to me since I have a Denon DVD player that beats them both.

No, that's not it. I did indeed install the firmware properly and it took. The player STILL wouldn't play those movies. It really amazes me that some people with the same model claim not to have a problem with these movies after installing the latest update...
My player has no issues with the popular titles.

I think there is now speculation as to whether updating via internet and updating via CD are really equivalent. Up updated mine to ver. 1.2 via CD, and it seems to work beautifully.

For my BD-P1400, I installed firmware update 1.1 via CD and update 1.2 by ethernet. I haven't played Pirates: At World's End or Die Hard on it yet, but Ratatouille still stutters at specific times (it played perfectly on a friend's PS3). Perhaps it will play better if I update the player by CD?
