As big of a fan as I am, the truth is that Michael Mann hasn't made a great film since Collateral in 2004.

Public Enemies and Miami Vice were decent, but underwhelming.

...I didn't even bother to see Blackhat.

Miami Vice is excellent, especially the extended/director's cut. I don't really get the antipathy towards Public Enemies; yeah the aesthetic is a bit wonky and it's basically Heat-lite with historical figures, but it's a good movie overall.

...and Blackhat is worth a watch. Not great but it's OK.

Personally I wouldn't call Miami Vice or Public Enemies great films, but they're not bad movies either.

As I said...decent but underwhelming.

Especially if you were a big fan of the tv show.

Michael Mann says Heat 2 might be a movie or a TV series, if it ever gets made at all:

Quote:
Mann announced in 2016 that a novel inspired by "Heat" would be published by his own HarperCollins publishing imprint, but shared fresh details of the book with AFP.

"The novel is about two-thirds written, and it's the prequel to 'Heat' and it's the sequel to 'Heat' rolled together," said Mann. "So it's everything before the movie and everything after the movie."

Asked if he plans to give the novel the movie treatment, Mann said: "Of course!" before adding that he could also foresee it evolving into a television series.

"Initially a film, but the landscape is changing so radically and so quickly, who knows," he said.

Mann said the book would explore the time De Niro's character Neil McCauley spent in prison in his 20s, as well as the years Pacino's cop Vincent Hanna worked on the Chicago police force before moving to LA.

It will also feature the childhood of Val Kilmer's character, young bank robber Chris Shiherlis.

What is there to cover in a sequel?

...everyone but
[Show spoiler]Chris and Det. Vincent
is dead.

Did that need a spoiler tag?

If you knew how to read, you'd see that it's both a prequel and a sequel. And both Hanna and Chris are... you know, pretty major characters.

Sorry, did I hurt your feelings in that other thread?

I feel bad about that.

Thanks for another dime though.

I'd have to value your opinion in order to have my feelings hurt by something you said.

I don't care for the subject, sequel or prequel, just give me Mann directing something.
The man should be more prolific.

Yeah, I just want to see something new directed by Mann. The Vietnam miniseries or the western with Eric Roth would be My preferred choice!

I liked Public Enemies overall, my only issue is that Mann used DV cameras to shoot the film like he did Miami Vice. Period films should be on 35mm or these days on Alexa or Red where the image can look like film at least. The historical setting of Public Enemies and DV didn't mix well with me.

They weren't DV cameras. They were legit HD cameras.
Public Enemies was shot on the Sony F23

From what I understand the camera he used for Collateral and Miami Vice, The Thompson Viper, became obsolete by the time the F23 came into play.
But mainly, those movies were shot with shutter turned off with gives it that "video-y" look and Mann actually likes it that way.

Here's an article for more details.

Well, ok i wasn't specfic but it's still technically digital video right? Lol... but my point was that Public Enemies was a period piece, and film is more fitting to display that time period. It just looked weird to me.

The term DV is usually associated with Tape. Or at least to certain people. When I first took film classes I learned on mini DV. So when I see the letters it’s what I associate with. The Sony CineAlta’s that Mann used are in line with the ARRI, RED and current used CineAltas.
