Default My Dad's Take on PiP

My dad walked into my room last night and i was just watching my ps3 update, cause i was bored. he asked what i was doing and i told him it was updating the firmware. he asked what the new firmware was for and i told him it was for voice changing, DIVX and WMV, and PiP. He was like, "so with PiP on this thing can you be playing a game, but have a movie going on in the corner. i explained to him what profile 1.1 was with commentary and "making of" PiP. He looked at me and goes, " thats stupid, who would want that?" just to clarify my dad is a very typical consumer, who does enjoy his tech more than most, but i wouldn't call him a big enthusiest.

i agree with him about PiP, i could care less about PiP, i doubt i will ever use it. and it seems like a lot of ppl here agree with me. that brings me to a good question. do hd dvd fanboys really care about PiP and other interactivity, or do they just talk about it, because thats all they have left?
within 6 months blu-ray is going to be sporting beter interactive features, when blu-ray has superior interactive features, since that has been something so dear to them, it will be curious if they keep saying interactivity is sooooo important.

I don't care much about it but why are you asking if the fanboys care about it? Where are they? Here? It's hunting time.

Default My take on PIP

I am a big fan of watching movies that way the director intended... the movie is the product, not the PIP. I want to enjoy the movie with pristine PQ and AQ... and that little PIP window just blocks my view of the entire movie... and the comments from the PIP just interupts the audio of the movie.

IMO it'll be one of those things that sounds kinda cool but ends up being next to worthless.

I'm glad we have it now though just so it isn't something the haters can bring up.

Correct! I never use things that interrupt my enjoyment of a movie. I think I listened to maybe half of one commentary track on one DVD and gave up. I really don't care to listen to what the director or an actor was thinking or doing while filming the movie. I am sure if you asked most people, (or even if you didn't) if audio commentary tracks disappeared from DVDs, how many people would really care or even notice?

And by everyones comments here, it looks like now that it is possible on Blu-ray, nobody really seems to care that it exists.

I see no use for it. I won't even bother to look at it. I don't care what happened when they were filming.

I recomended the s300 to my parents and I said "would you care if cant do pip"? my mom and dad said will it play dvds? I said yes and they were like what the hell is pip-just like op I stated its possibility and they said I wouldnt use that. My dad has over 300 dvds, and loves movies and has never watched the extras on one of those dvds. He likes MOVIES, so this pip and internet stuff is not going to affect sales of blu ray 1.0 standalones. Ive personally sold tons of blu standalones and never been asked ONCE if its 1.0 or has internet connectivity. The number one question is will it play regular dvds.

What would be cool is if the PS3 recorded you saying your name, the new voice changer makes it sound like sound like some sci-fi chick. Then in a carefully crafted sci-fi movie, the PiP would pop up and interact with you as part of the movie; something like "Hey we need your help [name]. You need to enter this code "1-8-1-8-2" otherwise we are all dead". Then you would use your remote to do that otherwise the movie will stop.

I agree with you and your dad, I could careless about PiP. And hd dvd fanboys are saying PiP is so important because it's the only thing they can say.EDIt: And it is a good selling point so I can kind of care a bit about it.

I totally agree with you and your Dad, PIP is just a gimic that really has not much use. I've had the capability and ability on my TV's for the last 15 years and never bothered to hook it up. When I want to watch a movie I watch a movie and when I'm playing games that's what I want to do at that moment.

Agreed here as well, however if it is necessary to go to 2.0/BD live, then I understand its importance.

That´s it.

I´m sure even now, HDDVD fans are showing off with it.

If you say to them: "Blu-ray has PiP now"

they´ll say: "HDDVD has it since the beginning"
